1000 ways to feast at Google

June 2, 2008

Caf-e-te-ri-a
  noun
    - a restaurant in which patrons wait on themselves, carrying their food to tables from counters where it is displayed and served.

    - a lunchroom or dining hall, as in a factory, office, or school, where food is served from counters or dispensed from vending machines or where food brought from home may be eaten.
So what's the big deal with visiting a company cafeteria? Most large companies in Silicon Valley have them but they normally do a mediocre job. Throw out all those preconceived notions on what you think cafeteria food is all about. It's not the bland stuff you had in high school. It's not even the stuff you get at your company cafeteria. We've eaten at Intel, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Apple and none of those guys can compete. Google food is 9+ RATED restaurant quality food. Think of it as high-end Las Vegas buffet where it's all the (G)ourmet food you can eat for free. It's incredible!

Getting there
Google's campus is located in Mountain View off Shoreline Blvd. There dozens of Google buildings and finding all 18 cafeterias is a challenge. We've done the grunt work for you and made it easy. We've provided a little map and all you have to do is click and find.

There are a couple of things you'll need to know before showing up for a free meal. It's not open to the public but luckily there are 3 ways to get in;

  1. Googler Invite: The best chance of eating on campus

  2. Interview: Endure the interview phone olympics and pray for the on-campus visit

  3. Trespassing: Bypass security and tailgate your way into the Cafeterias (Not recommended as trespassing can lead to a huge fine with possibility of jail)
Let's imagine you score the lunch and now you have to choose between the 18 cafeterias. Each cafeteria has a regional cuisine and menus change often. We've provided sample menus on each of the cafeterias and your jaw will drop. Ingredients are fresh, seasonal, and brought in locally. There's lots of cuisines to choose from, so pick carefully. We kinda borrowed (ask to remove it and we will comply) from the Google intranet site. Click on any of the icons below.

All cafes are run like restaurants with some of them containing a kitchen manager, executive chef, sous chef, and pastry chef. Presentation of the dishes are outstanding and hard working kitchen crew always serving with a smile. Major props to each of the cafeterias for running a tight ship. With their mission statements proudly hanging, it's a no-brainer food is serious business.

Menus change from time to time so whatever we ate on the days we visited, we can't guarentee those dishes will be available. Our reviews will be shorter than the norm and hopefully give you an idea what each of the cafeteria serves. We arranged the cafeterias per campus region and each page will contain multiple listings.

P.S. If anyone on the Google board would like to offer us honorary passes for unlimited Google Cafeterias, feel free to contact us. We would be more than happy to constantly update our cafeteria visits.
