I have been going Acapulco since I was in grade school, with my parents. This is not the same Acapulco chain that you see in Sunnyvale, etc. Its a family-run restaurant that has been here since the 50s. Its dark, forboding-looking, and boasts a traditional menu with interesting flavors. Its not a by-the-numbers type of restaurant. The rice for example is more peppery than standard mexican places. The refried beans are richer, etc.

Today I went in hungry, and ordered the two-item Cheese Enchilada dinner (which includes the rice and beans). I quickly worked at it. I was able to finish everything, except for a half of an enchilada. This is seriously large portions if I am unable to finish it. Great stuff though. The highlights for me were the cheese, which was super runny and not too salty. The enchiladas was a perfect balance of high flavor and spiciness (it really wasn't too spicy). The shredded cheese on top was a stiffer, thinner, fresher aged type, as opposed to the standard greasy shredded mozzarella you will see in other places. Very high quality - its easy to see why the lines are out the door during peak hours - as it has been for decades.

Don't let the name of the place dissuade you - its not the same. This is the real deal - and will always be a favorite destination when I am in Alameda.

Chicken Burrito

Great food. An excellent referral from JatBar. Chips are good as well. Service is hit or miss.
