We've had many requests for Sushi House in Alameda and its easy to see why its a favorite among our users. The view over the bay beats about 90% of the other places we visit, portion sizes for the price are quite the value, and more importantly the taste. My friend and I had finished a photography class and it was perfect timing to beat the dinner rush at Sushi House. Arrive early and you can avoid 30 minute wait times.

Im skeptical upon large sushi restaurants (75+ people) and young sushi chefs. Here's the deal, Sushi House isnt your authentic sushi house with japanese chefs and a whiteboard with fishes you've never heard off. They do have a jaw dropping menu that rivals the menu at Cheesecake Factory, Im exaggerating but you get the point. Trust me, you'll find something on the menu to order. My rating is strictly for rolls and NOT NIGIRI or SASHIMI.

Hamachi Roll - 6 pieces and way too much rice. I dont recall what the fish tasted like but it didnt have any fishy smell to it. The pictures dont lie, these pieces need to be about 1/3 the size. I wouldnt order this again

Spider Roll - Average tasting but worth re-ordering

Lion Roll - Highly recommend and a winner for sure. Its a california roll wrapped with salmon and topped with tobiko. Its then baked and smothered in some kind of sauce. Melts in your mouth and a mess to pick up. Salmon was fresh and crab was moist with mayo mix. It artery clogging good and a must order. At 8.95, its more expensive than the other rolls but worth it.

Webster Roll - white tuna, crab, tempura shrimp, and avocado. Look at picture #8. It ran the length of the sushi board and double the height of normal rolls. There must have been half an avocado on it and if you know your fruit prices, its $1.99 for haas avocados at the market. The warmness of the tempura and coldness of the avocado, fish, and crab puts an interesting mix in your mouth. At $8.95, this roll would easily fetch $14.95 at other sushi places. White tuna was good, crab mix was savory, and tempura shrimp was outstanding. Webster roll is nearly a tie with the Lion roll so do yourself a favor and order both.

chicken teriyaki donburi - I had 3 bites of this and enjoyed what I ate. Heavy servings of charbroiled chicken and sweet sauce will probably be a favorite with younger adults.

Although Sushi House was extrememly busy, the waitresses did an decent job with the service. Water was slow and tea was flat. I was suprised how fast the rolls came out with no mistakes on the order. The rolls are inexpensive with portion size almost more impressive than the view of the bay. There is outdoor seating with long tables which would be ideal for large gatherings or parties. Sushi House is a winner in my book and the thought of the Webster and Lion roll leaves me with bittersweet withdrawals.

I only visit Sushi House when an out of town friend or relative comes in and I want to introduce them to the splendor that is this restaurant. Even with that reason, I end up going at least twice a month because my family LOVES the restaurant so we order takeout occasionally.

Waiting is definitely a trying experience as you walk into what seems like a spacious waiting area until you go on a Friday or Saturday night. Then it gets pretty crowded and nauseating as people push and shove to reach the hanging clipboard. Once you find it, youre supposed to write your name, number in your party, and seating preference (table, bar, patio). Sushi House does not take reservations (although they mistakenly took one for my party of nine on a Friday night and it was GREAT!).

The service is generally pretty quick. There were various instances where they brought out my entire order out at once (about five rolls). However, dont be insulted if the waitresses/waiters zoom by you without notice. This restaurant is known for its food, not service.

My favorites are the Lambada roll and the Samurai roll which are each priced at a very reasonable $8.95. Ive always been taught that the more raw fish there is in a roll, the more money it is worth and these rolls hold true to that belief. On the other hand, California rolls are the biggest waste of money since its normally fake crab mixed with mayonnaise. Fortunately, not only does this place give generous slices of fish but they load you up on the toppings: avocado, tobiko, sesame, etc. The Lambada roll consists of: tuna wrapped in rice, salmon, and seaweed all topped with tobiko, avocado and spicy house sauce. The Samurai roll is very similar and consists of: tuna and cucumber, crab meat and unagi wrapped in rice and seaweed topped with salmon, avocado, tobiko and house special sauce (same sauce as Lambada but much more mild and sweet).

Rolls of this stature at another restaurant could easily be from $11-15 each.

One of my favorite non-roll dishes here is the Hae Dup Bop which is actually a variation of a popular and common Korean dish, Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap. Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap contains rice, a variety of veggies, strips of beef, a raw egg and spicy sauce on the side for you to mix together in a very hot clay pot. You can get it without the “Dol Sot” which morphs it into a cold dish in a regular bowl. Similarly, Sushi Houses Hae Dup Bop contains a variety of sashimi (tuna, salmon, squid, halibut) and greens over rice w/ spicy sauce on the side for you to mix in. Its not in a clay pot because… hello! It would cook all the fish. Im probably biased because I absolutely love Korean food but its a light and fun dish to eat for you adventurous raw fish lovers.

Most people dont know but if you go on a Saturday afternoon, you can catch a live jazz band at around 1:30pm. Theyre no Miles Davis but it definitely adds to the ambiance.

Sushi house is worth waiting for. Sushi made by Japanese sushi chefs behind the counter, made fresh with the right amount of ingredients in each bite. Their specialized sushi rolls are a must try as its plenty as a meal in itself or to share among friends.

The wait is usually about an hour or more on the weekends as they do not take reservations, and theres still a bit of waiting during lunch hours and during the weekday. The atmosphere is laid back and chill as plenty of groups gather for the food and sushi. The service is very reasonable and waiters attentive to the customers.

During the wait its best to grab a take out menu or the restaurant menu and view the selections as theres plenty of selections to choose from. This way once youre seated you already know what you or your group wants to order. Plus the menus will keep you entertained during your wait.

This is a great place to go among friends or a place to take a date.

Theres only one location as of now as they recently moved to a larger building within the same square. Located next to a lake with breathtaking viewings over looking the city lights during the night.

People generally tell their friends as this place no doubt generate traffic through word of mouth. My friends heard it from their co workers.

I ordered a dinner bento which is served with Tempura, soup, salad, rice, potato crisps and fruit and I get to choose two items. Most places Ive been to, the tempura is not included and can be selected as one of the items. The tempura served was not all vegetables either as I received a healthy portion along with two large shrimp tempuras. Mt Salmon Teriyaki was tender, the teriyaki sauce just right as it was semi sweet, yet not too thick or thin. I also chose the Yakiniku, which is sliced beef and vegetables in Yakiniku sauce, which is a stir fry in light soy sauce. The choices for the $13.95 bento includes chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, 6 pieces of California roll, broiled mackerel (saba shioyaki), breaded lean pork lion (tonkatsu), beef dumpling (Gyoza), Tuna Sashimi, or Yakiniku.

Why is this place a good value? Ive seen lunch prices at other places served comparable to dinner prices at Sushi House. Take for example, their Donburis (over-rice dishes) served with soup and salad only cost 6.95 on the menu, where as Ive seen other places charge over 9.00 for something that doesnt taste as good as Sushi House. Most of their Udon dishes are priced around 7.95. Lunch Bentos are 8.95 for two items and 11.95 for 3 items.

Whats impressive is there Special Combination Sushi Boats and their special Sushi rolls. Their Sushi house boat which serves 2 or 3 comes with either sushi and/or sashimi for $50.00. I saw a table eating the Sushi House Cruise Ship, which serves 4 to 6 people and the sucker was huge. I didnt think the four at the table could even finish it but they did with some difficulty. At $100 for the cruise ship that comes out to a decent $25 a piece for sushi lovers.

Their special sushi rolls are very large and is enough to fill anyones appetite. It may not seem a lot but at 8.95 for a roll of sushi, its plenty of food. Even I had difficulty finishing and sharing what my friends ordered. It was too much food and the bill was very reasonable. Our Maki rolls which is cut into 4 to 8 pieces were Lion King, which is California roll with salmon wrapped and baked served with a light cream sauce. We also ordered the Bay Scallop roll which is composed from crab meat and avocado topped with baked scallops and a house special sauce. Most of the regular types of sushi are priced at only 3.50 to 3.95.

Pricing:

Plenty of selections with very reasonable prices. More choices than most Japanese restaurants for less. The portions are very large and even I had trouble finishing my meal.

The stores in this plaza close early, although if youre too hungry to wait you can have a light snack at Taco Bell, McDonalds, or Starbucks located within walking distance.

Payments Accepted:
Accepts Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club

My aunt and uncle took the family out here and I was plesantly surprised at the incredible view! Just stunning! They have a great location.

My uncle kicked me out of the car so I could run up to the waitlist and write my name (we had a party of 5). I wrote down my name, the number in my party, and 'any' under table preference (options were table, bar, or patio). Not even a second later, one of the waitresses came by and asked if the sushi bar was okay. I didn't mind, and we were seated immediately. There were probably five other parties on the waiting list before me and they all put 'tables' as preference heheh..

My uncle did the ordering and we all shared 6 rolls. Crunchy roll, lion king roll, island roll, spider roll, bay scallop roll and the shrimp tempura roll.

Service was actually very quick considering the restuarant was about 80% full. I was very much enjoying my tea (tasted like roasted rice. Yum) and probably waited only 10 minutes before the first couple of rolls came out. Let me say that these were HUMUNGOUS. Maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but it was seriously bigger than the average rolls.

I can't really describe each roll because everything was a blur to me. They all tasted good, what can I say. It's definitely not authentic from looking at the long list of rolls with crazy names. I did enjoy the bay scallop roll and island roll. The salmon just melted in my mouth. No chewing required.

You probably think 6 rolls shared among 5 ppl wouldn't suffice but it was just my uncle, his pregnant wife and 3 girls. We were stuffed. After Sushi House, we all headed to Fenton's Ice Cream, but that's another review =]. I would definitely love to come back and bring a date or something, and try their homecooking.
