After the late dinner at Yoko's in San Mateo, we headed out looking for dessert. Late night dessert shops are slim pickings on the peninsula with donut shops dominating the selection. I had remembered one of the users recommended Pilgrim Kitchen for the pies. They're open until 11PM so we had plenty of time to drive from San Mateo over to Belmont.

Pilgrim Kitchen sits on El Camino Real away from all the other busy restaurant districts. The bakery also doubles as a coffee shop with plenty of tables to enjoy your sweets. For this late in the day (9:40'ish), they had a great selection of bakery goods; cookies, pastries, donuts, pies, cakes, cupcakes, etc. Just remember, do as their sign says, 'no calorie counting allowed'.

blueberry a la mode (image 11) - the slices are huge, I would eye them at 1/5 of the pie. Filling tasted fresh, crust was flaky and buttery. I should have gotten it heated for the ice cream but after a couple of bites, I didn't care about anything. Ice cream + pie = ecstasy. I think it costs $3.50 but I don't remember nor do I care, I would order this any day.

I thought my blueberry was the winner of the night until I tried the Pecan Pie (image 10). Wow, without a doubt, it's one of the best Pecan Pies I've ever had. The filling was a custardy texture as opposed to other places where they butcher it with the gritty rough stuff. The pecan topping crackled and honestly think they can sell the topping as candy by itself.

The atmosphere at Pilgrim Kitchen is quiet where you can sit and wind down from a busy day on the job. Coffees are served in real mugs and baked goods tasted like recipes handed down from past generations of family. I sat there among friends enjoying a good piece of pie chatting about nothing. No one bothered us, no one rushed us. I love this place and happy to add it to my favorites list.

Custard filled chocolate bar

My family owns a business nearby and this is where we went for doughnuts all the time. It is nice to find a small place to get some nice sweet baked goods. The cakes are OK, but being Asian I'm used to moister, spongier cakes that aren't as sweet

Raised donut, chocolate glazed

Fluffy and soft, not overly sweet or greasy, with just the right amount of chocolate glaze. Best donut I've had in a long time. It's a 9 in my book, too.
