Ive been hearing about Cheeseboard Pizza for sometime now and finally had the chance to trying it out. I had extrememly high expectations from this place considering all the feedback I recieved. Heres the deal...they only serve 1 type of pizza for the day, live jazz music, a line longer than the ones you see at Disney Land(Im exaggerating but you get the point), and the best one yet, if they sell out of pizza...they will close early for the day. This better be worth it.
Waiting in line was bad at all, the live jazz music really helps the time go by. Todays pizza was; tomatoes, arugula, feta, vinegrette dressing, and red onions. We ordered a 1/2 pizza and they gave us complementary slices to go with it. If you want to eat your pizza then, theres barely any room in the restaurant, so you might want to try the traffic island. Enjoy slices in the sun while drivers watch you eat amazin pizza.
Lets examine this pizza. Its all about the bread. It has to be a mixture of cheese, secret ingrediants, and drugs??? I have no idea what they put in it but its magical. I've never had anything like this!!! Crust is a 10. I dont recall if there was sauce since we had sliced tomatoes so I'll grade it with toppings - 9.5. Veggies were fresh and probably organic. Cheese is a 10, who knows how types of cheese were on this pizza? 2? 3? Everything is so fresh on this pizza.
This place cannot be missed if your in the bay area! If you want to experience gourmet style pizza at a fraction of the price, Cheeseboard Pizza would be one of my highest recommendations.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 9/18/2004 - 9 Rating: You never know what your going to get at Cheeseboard unless you show up or call them up (they only make 1 type of pizza a day). Todays special was feta, onions, garlic, zucchini, parseley, and maybe tomatoes(i didnt taste any). The pizza was excellent but I have to have tomatoes on it. Toppings were dry and needed a little more moisture to it..something watery like you guessed it...tomatoes. Its still one of my favorite pizza places. If you are into california, new york, or chicago style, you want want to pass on this place. I would categorize Cheeseboard Pizza as gourmet-organic, a restaurant almost like California Pizza Kitchen or Wolfgang Puck but without the corporate flavor. I highly recommend trying Cheeseboard Pizza at least once in your lifetime, their crust is absolutely amazing. |

Cheeseboard Pizza is not your normal pizza or Pizza place. I will spare the details of the 1-pizza-a-day that is covered in other reviews on the page, and go straight to my interpretation.
I am a BIG fan of thin crust NYC syle pizza. I didn't have high hopes for this place as I thought it might be a bit too foo-foo for me. If you go to this place expecting to eat a Pizza, I think you will be disappointed. Its good food, let me say that, but its not real pizza. To me, its more like a gourmet breadstick. The crust is REALLY good, the toppings vary by the day that you arrive. Overall, I found todays pizza to be tasty, but not irresistable. Its vegetarian pizza, which I commend them for, its just not my idea of the perfect pizza.
The lines can belong, live music plays while you wait, the employeeowners pump out pizza like an assembly line, feeding the fast-moving line of folks waiting for their pizza. Most seem to take it to go, though some were lucky to find tables. They open at 4:30, and if you get there when they open, you'll be eating pizza relatively quickly.

First of all, I am not a big pizza fan. Not that I have anything against pizza, just that I enjoy other types of food more. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the Chessboard Pizza experience today. It's a whole new pizza experience to me. I was blown away by the pizza. This is more like a gourmet type of pizza, it was light, thin crust, very fresh ingredients and served hot out of the oven. The pizza place also doesn't look like your regular pizzeria place, it's more like a to-go place. People wait in line to get the order, they serve only one pizza for the day, so ordering was easy and fast which made the line moving fast. Today's special was feta, sun-dried tomatoes, onions, garlic, zucchini, and parsley. Since I don't dig too much on the watery tomato sauce, this pizza was perfect to me. Garlic was strong and everything on the pizza tasted so fresh, and the crust...............hmm.... was excellent. The pizza can actually be an appetizer for me. I would recommend anyone who is in town not to miss this place.

Considering the fact that Ive lived in the Bay Area for 22 years, I hadnt heard about this place until a couple months ago. I can honestly say that I love any and every type of pizza. The only exception is if its topped with feta cheese, and luckily you can avoid this by checking Cheeseboards website at: www.cheesboardcollective.com to see todays pizza. Unfortunately, Cheeseboard is a fan of feta (they are using it 3 times this week). But what an ingenious idea it is to make only one pizza a day so that the long lines wont be longer and its not long before you get your pizza.
The live jazz music (man on piano) definitely makes the wait more bearable.
I went with a friend and we ordered a large because the pizza is thin crust and we were confident with our eating capabilities. We finished the entire thing, to the point where our teeth hurt because of the crispy crust. We didnt notice that they sold pizza in halves; otherwise, we wouldve opted for that alternative.
We ended up sitting at a little table right in front of the restaurant where every one in line would stare at us while we ate each bite. By the way, there is little seating inside but you can also sit on the lawn divider, as I saw many Cal students do.
Our pizza of the day consisted of mozzarella, sausage, roasted red bell peppers, garlic olive oil, garlic, onions and cilantro. Im glad that I didnt come on a feta day or a day with no meat. The pizza was light, full of flavor, and had the right amount of sauce (too much is overpowering and gets all over your mouth and too little makes it taste like a dry cracker).
My suggestion is that they consider making two different types of pizzas a day to spice it up. Even though the pizza is absolutely fantastic, I got bored after eating a couple slices of the same kind but then again, you shouldnt eat half a pie to begin with. |
