The wife and I were in Berkeley for the weekend and decided to stop by Rick and Anns on Saturday morning. We arrived a bit early so there was a crowd but it wasn't insane. We got a table pretty quickly. The first thing that struck me was how nice the location is. Its right across the street from the Claremont hotel up in the hills. Its a REALLY good location - one of the best lazy weekend locations. It totally feels like a different world. If you want to go to a breakfast place that will impress out of town visitors this is your place.

I sit down and scan the menu. Most of the usual breakfast items here. I decide to try a few of the non-standard items. I select the coconut pancakes and the potato boat. The coconut pancakes were delicious - light and fluffy with grated coconut baked in. Very fresh and tasty. The potato boat was a bit of a letdown. It was large and had some great fresh veggies but I think the potatoes were a bit plain. The pesto and cheese made a nice combination though. I think if the potatoes were more like the ones at Los Gatos Cafe (a bit crunchier) we'd have a winner in this dish.

Overall I was impressed with the vibe of the place. It has a nice non-pretentious feel and some high quality food. I think Los Gatos Cafe edges it out for best bay area breakfast, but its hard to deny the great location and freindly waitstaff here. Definitely a winner.
