My parents were in town visiting and I wanted to take them for some Japanese. I broke one of my rules for out of town visitors, only take friends and family to restaurants that you have already been too. I dont know why I took the chance, maybe it was my obsession on always trying new places. We ended up at Aji Yoshi Ya in Burlingame.

We arrived late for dinner and this place was fairly dirty. My mom made comments on how the carpet had food all over the place. Its been my experience that Japanese restaurants normally have the cleanest places and Aji Yoshi Ya needs to clean up a bit. When we sat down in our booth, there was rice on the seats and table had soy sauce stains. I also had a view of the kitchen which looked like a mess too. In Aji Yoshi Ya defense, we were hitting them late at night probably after a whirlwind of customers.

For dinner I ordered hamachi, tempura roll, and beef sukiyaki

hamachi - nice cut, kinda chilled, tasted fresh to me, rates about average

tempura roll - small, barely tasted the shrimp, I dont think I would order it again.

sukiyaki - sliced beef served over broth with carrots, shrooms, onions, cabbage, glass noodles, tofu, and green onions. The dish is served at out an iron pot and its super hot, watch your mouth. Broth was ok and the beef was somewhat of a letdown as the beef was chewy. They did give you a healthy portion and if you are looking for a big meal, this will do the job.

I finished my meal and parents ate theirs ok. I thought the entire meal was uninspiring and not the type of experience I wanted for my parents. Price did not fit the value for what we were getting and I got the feeling that service wanted us out the door since they were closing. If I had any suggestions for Aji Yoshi Ya, clean up the restaurant and dont forget to serve the ice cream after the meal, its listed on the menu.
