I woke up hungry on Saturday and wanted to try this deli shop 3 blocks from my house. CJ's Gourmet Deli has been in the neighborhood longer than I've been in the area. I met up with a friend and walked over. We decided to split a Thanksgiving sandwich on sweet roll and Pastrami on Dutch.

The deli shop is small with 2 tables on the inside and a number of outdoor tables on the sidewalk. The sandwich selection is enormous, probably approaching 60 varieties. Prices are roughly $7 with extra toppings at .75 cents. A short time later, we took the sandwiches back to my place.

I started with the Pastrami on Dutch. Dutch was average of the mill tasting bread. Better than the chain sandwich places and on a par with other independent shops. I ordered the pastrami hot with pretty much all the standard toppings. The big standout was the option of ordering pesto and pepper sauce. The pesto presence was nonexistent on my side with majority of the flavoring coming from the mayo-based pepper sauce? Since pastrami is already peppery, I think the pepper sauce is overkill. I believe the menu said New York style pastrami which is a far cry from the thick sliced melt in your mouth jewish deli type of meat. It wasn't bad but don't get your hopes up. (Rated 7.25'ish)

Thanksgiving sandwich was the clear winner. The turkey is excellent. It's the real stuff and not the water processed garbage. They probably sliced it off a freshly roasted turkey. Other toppings like stuffing, cranberry, and provolone cheese wrapped in a sweet roll remind you that this is the most portable Thanksgiving meal ever. The sweet roll needs some work. It's too much bread for the amount of turkey in the sandwich. Other than that, I'd easily repeat order. (Rated 8.5)

I guess the only stickler is the price of the sandwiches. You'll spend $7-9 depending on what you get. The pastrami could have used more meat, same goes with turkey. More meat will cost you an additional $2. Parking isn't too bad. There's a parking lot next door but it tends to fill up during lunchtime and on weekends.
