Coming off a recommendation from a co-worker, decided to head out to Hickory Pit to investigate. Before arriving at the restaurant I had visions of an old bbq place with the flame grill fired up with the scent of bbq miles away. It didnt quite live up to my expectations as we were greeted with a diner with no smoke or bbq smell in my nasal range.

Judging from the interior, it was the diner that time forgot. Everything appeared old and for a place that serves bbq, it didnt even smell like bbq. I guess its ok as I came here for the burgers. I ordered the bacon cheddar cheeseburger.

bacon - 2 strips, kinda thick, its the perfect complement to any meal

cheese - cheddar, wish it would have been melted

veggies - standard fare

bun - sesame toasted, good

burger - even though this burger wasnt cooked over an open flame, the onions inside the beef made this burger quite tasty. Hickory Pit gives you the options of getting raw onions or chopped onions inside the pattie. The meat was somewhat crumbly but greasier than other gourmet burger places. The grease practically soaked the lower bun. The grade of beef was much better than your average fast food restaurant. I think it was a 1/3 lb pattie and will fill you up.

If you order the burger go with the beef and onions. I think it saved the burger from being just an ok burger. Although I ordered a decent tasting burger, I would probably recommend sticking to Hickory Pit specialties like the BBQ or breakfast menu.

I have many fond memories of the Hick'ry Pit. My parents used to go to the Hayward location and bring it home, and then when they opened up in Fremont (where China Season is now) we went there for a few years as well.

There big claim to fame is the BBQ Pork Ribs. Its probably among the messiest things you will ever eat. So perhaps not a good lunch destination or place to take a date or a place to go before hitting up an opera or something.

As you can probably tell by now, I don't go here anymore, but I just wanted to make sure to put in some props for the original recipe ribs. Its what made them famous all those years ago. Just don't expect to walk away after the meal and NOT smell like bbq pork for the rest of the day.

A comfy place with good people working there. Their garnishes (corn and BBQ beans) are an excellent change that sets this place from others.

At breakfast time, get ready to be sandwiched in among the "regulars." I sat next to a group discussion of a guy selling his mom's house while putting her in a rest home. When I paid the check the pastry case had 2 flies bussing inside. Ne
