I dont know why I never got around to reviewing Kirks Steakburgers. Ive been here at least 4 times and decided it was time for a return visit with updated pictures and a review. With 3 locations in the south bay, we hit up the Cupertino restaurant right off the 85.
Right when you walk into Kirks you'll admire the flame grill firing up behind the counter. Unlike some other burger joints, for an indoor grill, they have excellent ventilation. Its a beautiful site for any hamburger admirer. I ordered the kirk's steakburger with fries and a drink.
bun - toasted white
burger - 1/3 lb pattie, definitely a grade or two better than your fast food restaurant. Very lean and juicy. My last couple of visits before, the meat tasted much better. Todays burger was bland and I could swear it had no seasoning. It was terribly disappointing and even the mustard and toppings couldnt help the taste.
fries - wedge cut fries with slight batter on it. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside....delicious
So whats with the 7.5? Well since Ive have been to Kirks Steakburgers quite a few times and my previous dining experiences were much better, I averaged it to a 7.5

What a rough week. First a Reuben sandwich at Boardwalk and now this. At least this was actually worth the stomach pains. The steak burgers are very flavorful here. There are 3 Kirks locations (though I think the Palo Alto one might be closed). I have been to both of the other two and they are both consistent quality. The burgers are not terribly greasy as they use very high quality meat. The prices are on the high side, but in this case its definitely worth it. The burgers aren't HUGE things that focus more on quantity than quality, you get pure quality here, and they are decent size. Like Clarke's, Kirk's lets you build your own toppings after picking up your burgers. I think I like Kirk's better than Clarke's but Clarke's does offer a meatless patty, so I dock a little off Kirk's for that. Otherwise, if you are a meat eater, I think you would be hard pressed to find a better burger in the South Bay.

I had heard about Kirks from a few people and finally, last week, I made it here. I ordered the Big Griller and a Chocolate Shake. Before I say anything else, let me just say that the Shake was probably one of the best I have ever had, almost divine! The burger tasted great too, cooked a perfect medium. I think this place needs to do something about the hygience situation though. The table which had the straws and spoons wasnt clean and so were some of the tables. Also, there was something like an open dumpster in the parking lot behind the restaurant. I dont think too many people would like to see that.
All in all, food wise, I was satisfied to a 10, but the cleanliness or rather the lack thereof is the reason for a 7. |

Been to Kirks in Cupertino several times and every time I go it seems to be more and more crowded, yet the steak burger quality has gone down for me. The smell of charcoal grilled steak burgers is tantalizing and makes my mouth water. Upon entrance, you can feel the heat as you observe the menu and place your order, the heat coming from the open flame grill cooking the steak patties or grilling the hot dogs and chicken.
Kirks accepts cash or credit cards, which is good because ordering a meal here packs a wallop on your wallet. To get the full experience I recommend ordering the Big Kirk which is half a pound of steak burger (weight before cooking) on a French roll, a side of onion rings, and a soda or shake. The onion rings here are very good, large, greasy, and nicely battered. The shakes are thick, but a little too sweet for my taste. The steak burger doesnt look appealing but its flavorful, plus you get to add your own condiments and toppings. There are plenty of toppings to choose from as well as plenty of sauces besides ketchup and mustard.
The first few times Ive been to Kirks the steak burgers were very juicy, but the past few times Ive gone the steak burgers have been a bit on the dry side. I usually order medium well, but theyve been cooking it a bit too well for my taste. The prices also no longer seem appealing as it is quiet expensive for lunch.
Theres inside dinning as well as rear patio dining, but the tables are as clean as how the previous customers leave it, which may require self cleaning during peek hours. If you go during peek hours parking is very limited and the location is inconvenient when you exit as its located next to the 85 onramp and sandwiched between two traffic lights.
Its best to bring a friend to eat as they often have coupons where if you buy one steak burger, 2 drinks, and 2 sides, you can get a steak burger for free.
Bottom line: Good place to try if youve never been here, but in the long run it packs a wallop to your wallet as there are other hamburger joints equal to Kirks for less.

Kirks is a good place for a burger. The meat is chopped steak, hence the name steakburger. This place has been around for ages! Since before Mickey Dees! The steak patties are clearly higher quality than you get at any hamburger joint. I ordered the 'big griller' 1/2lb patty on french roll with swiss and grilled onions, and a rootbeer milkshake and garlic fries. The burger was huge. heavy on the bread. the roll quality was nothing special, but not bad. too much bread. And this was a mistake, i could have easily filled up on the 1/3lb version. The burgers are grilled, and i prefer this to fried. The milkshake was quite good, served at the ideal thickness. A real milkshake. No frills here with self serve condiments and plastic utensils. the garlic fries were ok, but i thin i might prefer plain fries, or on another table, i saw some fried onion strings and those things looked really good. my meal was a bit pricey, the shake was about four dollars, the burger around seven and a bit more for the fries. They have a very simple concept here and they do it well. The end product, though, is fairly average. Price makes this place a bit too costly. I think i will return but not frequently. The burgers don't stand out quite enough to make me think of this place first when i tell myself i want a good burger. And definately skip the 'big' versions on the larger roll. if you are really hungry, you can get an extra patty for the 1/3 lb selections, and this would be a better play.

Thanks to Jsatre for lunch today...
This place only accepts cash/visa/or mastercard. neither of which I had. We went to the de anza location, which will be moving in January.
We both ordered the single steakburger with a slice of swiss.
Bun - Good and Fresh, freshly baked at Le Boulanger Patty - Thick and Juicy, cooked medium and satisfying. Cheese - Good size, sliced thick then melted over the patty.
You get your burger then proceed to the rear where they have a condiment bar. Add tomatos, pickles, onions, lettuce, mayo, pepperchini's, ketchup, mustard, etc here.
Besides the small parking lot I had a good experience. I'm definitely willing to return.

I meet wchane for lunch Friday and we agreed to meet at Kirk's Steakburger. The De Anza location is a little confusion when it comes to parking. I wound up in an office lot next door with plenty of signs threatening to tow Kirk's customers... Ah well, I'll have to risk it.
The scent of charcoal cooked burger sure can help you find the place!
We both ordered the single burger with swiss chsses. The place was packed and we grabbed the the last table next to the condiment bar. It was a snug fit, but we made it work.
Burgers took about 12-15 minutes, but they are definitly cooked over charcoal briquets. I saw the cook load the grill up with that familiar blue bag brand.
Bun - nice spongy texture, certainly fresh and my guess is that they're from Le Bou too.
Meat - a thicker cut/grind that a usual burger patty. Nice and juicy, cooked to a delicious medium. A little greasy however, do eat over the paper tray they give you.
Cheese - nice wide slice covered the entire thing.
Condiments - you pick what you want and everything was nice and fresh (green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, white and red onion, pickles, relish, etc.) Plenty of sauces from A1 to BBQ to of course ketchup and mustard were in squeeze bottles.
Good burger, but nothing that knocked my socks off. The meat was flavorful, but I felt a film in my mouth at the end. If in the area and looking for a good non-chain burger, Kirk's is a good pick. Overall value - so so. $15 for 2 singles and 2 small drinks. |
