After being deprived of japanese food for nearly 10 days, I had a strong craving for sushi and other foods I can't pronounce. Looking through the restaurant list of places to try, Sushi Zono was a recommendation for the fresh fish and fried ice cream.

Sushi Zono is hidden in the back of a shopping center so be on the lookout. We arrived at the normal jat time which is before noon. The restaurant was somewhat busy with a couple of patrons hanging at the sushi bar talking to the chef and large group of people at 1 table. All over the restaurant are sushi specials posted on bright colored paper. Prices range were inline with other places in the area, maybe a tad higher but the fish was fresh.

blue fin - $6, picture #6, this one scared terry as he had never seen a piece of fish as red as it was. I've had blue fin tuna before and it's a red fish but today's fish was BRIGHT BRIGHT red. My pictures don't even do justice. Other than the scary red color, it was a beautiful tasting fish. No fishy taste. Generous cut and just the right amount of rice. Sushi rice was an perfect mix of sugar and vinegar. Wasabi was out of control hot sending fiery vapors through the nose.

tamago - $3.25, picture #5, fluffy egg, semi-sweet, very good, would order again.

amaebi - $5.25, picture #9 and 10, the shrimp heads in picture #9 are deep fried. Another item that grossed terry out. I tried to convince him the legs and internals can taste like lobster but he didn't believe me. The shrimps were very respectable but one of my shrimps had a mini-turd on the tail, he must have had a huge breakfast! Shrimps were chilled with tobiko on top.

hamachi - $4.50, picture #7, fatty pieces of yellowtail amberjack that were falling apart, I'd like to thank the chef for the flavorful cuts. I always whine about the bloodline as I still haven't mastered the acquired taste. I removed part of it and enjoyed the rest.

hotate - $5.50, picture #5 (top right), fresh japanese scallops over a tiny bed slab of rice, my favorite of the bunch. It's hard to see but it was 3 scallop pieces over a giant mound of wasabi. Fresh and tasted like the ocean. There was so much scallop on the nigiri, you could have called it a scallop sleeping bag.

Terry ordered some maki rolls and the Hong Kong roll (picture #8) is one to get. I believe it's wasabi flavored tobiko over flash fried salmon, tempura shrimp, avocado?, and other things. Super tasty roll and more expensive than the others at $8.50.

The entire lunch rang in at $55 + tip. Some might think it was expensive but Terry and I left limping out of there with dragging stomachs. We haven't eaten this much sushi in a long time and was happy to fill up on great tasting food. I was ready to burst and loosened my belt to the previous notch. I was hurting. I thoroughly enjoyed the fresh fish but I think to reach the 9's, the chefs need to lay off on the wasabi. The wasabi overwhelmed a number of my nigiri pieces and have always been taught wasabi should always complement and not dominate. Sushi Zono is a definite repeat visit. If you guys visit, let me know how the deep fried ice cream is.

I found Sushi Zono to be a solid choice. Rolls were fresh. Wasabi was among the hottest I have ever experienced. California Rolls were a letdown (no - or very little- mayo). Rolls that included fish were *fresh*. Rolls with raw fish are not personally my favorite but I could tell that it was done well here. Prices were not crazy expensive but not exactly a bargain either. I would return here if only for the amazing hong kong roll. Next time I will order two of those and skip the rest. :)

Various sushi dishes

My family visited Sushi Zono last Friday night. The service was a little slow because of the holiday season it took 1 hour to get our main dishes. The spider rolls, Hong Kong rolls, and Gwen rolls were of outstanding quality as always.
