Having passed Britannia Arms the other day, I got this idea to round up some coworkers for some pub style fish and chips for lunch. We left around 12:15 and caravanned over to the brit pub. I've heard from several people Britannia Arms serves up decent fish and chips but I think the main attraction is the beer, soccer, dart boards, soccer, rugby, soccer, wireless access, soccer, and whatever you like to do after work. Did I mention soccer, eh football?

Keep in mind that this place is a bar first, place to watch sports or soccer, and last but not least, a restaurant. Upon walking in the smell of stale beer will quickly fill your nostrils..oh the essence of a good bar. Looks like the place hasn't changed in over 20 years since its been open.

Meals range at roughly $10 and for you budget conscience people, they offer lunch specials starting around $6. I ordered the combo plate which was 3 shrimps and 1 piece of cod.

Fries - thick cut fries, a bit crunchy and soft on the inside. I'm beginning to be a fan of the thicker cut style as opposed to the shoestring. You will like their fries.

Shrimp - lightly battered but not deveined. These shrimps must have gourged themselves before they were caught. Shrimps were a good size. I probably could have eaten a dozen of these. I would rate just above the average.

Fish - nice good size portions, fish cooked all the way through but I detect slight hint of fishiness.

Batter - much different than other pub style batters, very light on the batter but heavy on the grease. It was much crunchier than anything Ive had before. Im not sure if i liked it, its almost like a hybrid between Long John Silvers and Half Penny.

Britannia Arms serves a good fish and chips with a plentiful selection of beer. I can imagine people who have been drinking throughout the night swear that the food is the best. Seeing that I'm completely sober, Im hear to tell you its worth the effort to try Britannia Arms for their fish and chips and televised soccer matches.

Britannia Arms, like Rose and Crown in Palo Alto, is not the most bright and airy location for lunch. Its a bit dark and smells like stale beer. Don't let this dissuade you from stepping inside. You will find the lunch crowd to be rather small, even on the Friday that we went. The Britannia Arms lunch menu was small, but had a variety of items on it. None of which I paid much attention to, except for the Fish n Chips lunch special. 2 pieces of 3-4 oz fish with steak fries.

I found the fish to be decent, nothing awe-inspiring. The batter, though, was a bit different. I found it to be more like fried pig-skin type of texture. Very crispy compared to most deep-fried batter. It was still greasy, though.

The fries were fresh and tasty. I had no problems with them, especially when mixed with tartar sauce or ketchup.

The tartar sauce tasted out of the bottle. Nothing original here. It was decent enough for the job at hand, but didn't stand out in my mind as being a winner. I would return to Britannia Arms for the unique batter and the tasty fries. For $7 the price was inline with expectations as well.

There's nothing appealing about the appearence of this place, so I'll just skip that. Expect a dimly lit bar atmosphere and picnic benches outside. Sports memorabilia and beer banners line the walls.

I rarely come here, but when I do it's for fish and chips with a fresh pint of Guinness. The child's sized fish and chips is actually plenty for me and I believe only $5.

It comes with 2 pieces of fish instead of the regular 3 or 4. They are full sized pieces. Chips/Fries are included of close, a good handfull.

I like the batter they use, it's almost light and airy until you get into the fish. I like to let it drain on the fries, or if you prefer a napkin. The fish is fresh and has no odor, the batter compliments it lightly and as with anything fried it's tastey.

The fries...well they're fries and will fill you up.

The Guinness - A fresh pint of Guinness is the perfect beginning and ending to any pub meal in my opinion, and there is no exception here. I've never gotten a bad pour here, perfect head everytime.
