If my memory serves me right, I think we have had fish and chips 3 times on 3 fridays? I dont know if the beer has anything to do with it, but Im totally digging Fish and Chip Fridays. We had a large group with us today to try the Duke of Edinburgh.
We sat out on the patio enjoying the sun, toasting our pints, and eagerly awaiting our ocean delights. I was told the portions here were big so I ordered the Dutchess plate instead of the Duke. At $10-12 an order, the prices are quite high. For a fish and chips plate and 1 pint, you will be paying $20 out the door including tip....thats an expensive lunch. The fish finally arrived and sure enough, the fish were big.
chips - long thick cut fries, they probably gave me a full potato on my plate. Great stuff.
fish - probably cod, and they give you nice cuts, not that weak stuff you get at other places. Fish was a bright white, not slimey and had no fishy smell to it. Served right out of the fryer so watch your mouth. Looking good so far.
batter - for me, the batter weighs heavily in my rating. How oily is it? Crunchy? Flakey? I thought the Duke does an splendid job with the fish and chips. Fish was crunchy, batter wasnt too thick and wasnt undercooked. All in all, it was really good but not enough to dethrone Rose and Crown Pub in Palo Alto. Im more of a fan of the browner flakey batter that has more of a beer flavor to it. Hard to describe but if you find yourself eating the batter flakes after the meal, then you know what Im talking about.
We came here for the fish and chips but I think the real draw to the Duke of Edinburgh is the true English atmosphere and sports. The web site states the entire pub 100% english made. They even got an english pub designer to help create this place. We only caught a glimpse on the interior and it did remind me of the pubs I saw in England. I hear this place goes off during soccer season.
If you are caught in a bind between Race Street Seafood Kitchen in San Jose and Rose and Crown Pub in Palo Alto, you can settle the score by paying a visit to the Duke of Edinburgh where Im positive they wont let you down for a tasty Fish n Chips meal.

I've been to the Duke a few times for their fish and chips, and I must admit it is my pick for best Fish and Chips in the Bay Area. The batter is VERY greasy though it tastes absolutely perfect. The thick slabs of fish are fresh and flavorful. The chips/fries are really good as well. Quite substantial.
I usually order the Dutchess portion as its sooo huge (and I like to eat a big lunch). And that brings me to my one problem- the price. For $12, you are full, but your wallet is empty. Not exactly a bargain lunch destination. For that price, I could be at Arikato eating sushi or China Stix having some Dim Sum.
Alas, if you like Fish and Chips, you will not be disappointed by the Duke.

The Duke. at cupertino village, this is an odd juxtaposition. a british pub. in a pan asian shopping center. The Duke has been open every day since the first day in 1981, i believe, through rolling blackouts, loma prieta, Christmas Day, you name it. The price here is pretty steep. $5 for a pint. $10 a plate, minimum. I have eaten here twice in the past week, whil taking in World Cup matches. i had the British breakfast on one occasion and bangers and mash on the other. both meals were very good, and probably about $3.00 too much for me to really consider making this a regular pit-stop. the breakfast inculded two eggs, a small portion of hashed-browns, a little bacon, a banger, heinz baked beans, grilled tomato, and toast. and at ten dollars, it should include so much. with coffe and tip, the breakfast cost me $15 or $16. not cheap. but good, for sure. the bangers and mash was also delicious but at $12.50, just too damn expensive. three bangers (sausages) of decent size, sever with a blob of mashed potatoes and gravy, with a side uf spicy mustard. with two pints and tip, we are talking $25 bucks. ouch. the atmospher was great though. the entire pub is importaed from England. they have real darts! and two HD widescreens. i watched another match at britania arms, who has a similar menu, but i abstained as i was a little burned out on pub fare. but the menu prices were a bit more reasonable, and they had many more TVs, albeit lower quality. save the Duke for special occasions or big matches. unless you have money to burn, my guess is the brit is a better deal. a rowdier football craowd, too!

I have never been here and wanted to try something non-Asian within the Cupertino Village. Met with a friend for dinner at 5:30pm and upon walking in we see a sign that said to seat ourselves. We walk to the back of the room and find a table. A few minutes later, a waiter place menus on our table for us to look over. The waiter takes our drink orders, my friend has a beer ($5) and I order a soda.
Their menu items look tempting, especially their pies and breakfast items. I decided to stick with the fish and chips and my friend went with the BBQ chicken and fries. We also both order their red calm chowder, which is their version of Manhattan clam chowder. I have to admit their red clam chowder is super good. The soup had plenty of clams and potatoes with a hearty consistency.
While we waited for our food, we noticed chips with salsa, Buffalo wings, and teriyaki wings under heat lamps placed on a table and people were helping themselves to these appetizers and drinking beer. Later after we ate our meal we found out these items were free and we helped ourselves to a bit for taste. The teriyaki wings are not bad, had I known these were free in advance I would have ordered the two-piece fish instead of the three.
After our soup arrives, they bring a basket of warm rolls (3) with butter. These rolls are similar to the dinner rolls that can be bought at any supermarket but a little bit bigger. Nothing fancy in the rolls department. Our dinner arrive shortly after. Food comes out piping hot, as my friends chicken is too hot to eat. My friend complained his chicken being too dry as the plate consisted of two thin chicken breasts with BBQ sauce brushed over and steak cut fries. He cannot really complain for ordering BBQ chicken in a British pub.
My fish is much better as three large golden battered cod arrives on the plate hot with steak fries and a small portion or tarter sauce and ketchup and two lemon wedges. The fried fish is excellent eaten with the batter dipped in tarter sauce. There is not enough tarter sauce for all three pieces of fish, just enough for two. Once the crisp batter separates from the fish, the fish tastes a bit dry on its own. The fish itself is not juicy and tender like the ones served at Cooks Seafood. Steak fries were nothing special. A lot are given but we did not bother to finish them and opted for the free wings instead.
Water and soda are refilled once we were able to waive down a waiter. Sodas only come with one free refill. Our bill came out to be $40 with tax and tip. They forgot to bill us for the soup and we did not mention the error. Dinner was not bad but the price is a bit high.
Will come back to try other items on the menu.
Pluses: Free appetizers for dinner, tasty British treats, generous portion sizes, cozy.
Minuses: Only one free soda refill, expensive.
I am rating this an 8 due to the free appetizers, otherwise it would only be a 7.5.

You guys weren't kidding, these were the most expensive fish & chips i've ever had however they were also delicious especially with a pint of guinness.
Not much more to add, except the guinness seemed to keep coming. Although I am not coming here on a weekly basis it deserves an 8.5
