I had been meaning to add Fatima to the site after its change in location. I wanted to make sure it still maintained the high quality. I had the opportunity today and brought my friend Robin along.

We arrive and there is a good number of people here, but there is no waiting. We are quickly shown a table and the menus. Since we are doing a bit of catch up as well, we are taking our time. They check on us periodically for ordering, but not pestering at all.

We go with an order of the Green Onion bread, and I go with the spicy Eggplant while Robin goes with the curry chicken.

Our lunch specials came with soup and eggrolls. The egg drop soup is good but there is a little bit of meat in there (at least in mine) which was a letdown.

The eggrolls, however, were veggie and quite good. A bit on the small & thin side, but still tasty. Before we could finish these however, our dishes (and the green onion bread) arrived. Service was very swift and attentive.

The green onion bread was tasty. If you like sesame, especially, you will enjoy it. The dough was soft and very fresh tasting, like a well-done pizza crust. The taste of green onion and garlic was there, but not overpowering.

The eggplant, however, was just OK. It was not spicy at all, and while it was still fresh tasting, it was nothing I would order again. Robin said that his curry chicken didn't have a whole lot of flavor either.

Prices were good, service was great, and the green onion bread was tasty, yet I still didn't think this place could break out of the 8 range. The dishes need a little more pizzazz but the lunch specials are tasty, served fast, and a good deal.

Taking a break from reviewing taquerias. ;-)

Been to Fatima a few times since they moved to their the current location, which has the advantage of being within walking distance from work.

I usually get their $6-7 lunch special but today was a 'holiday', so it wasn't offered. Although this may be stated on the fine print on the menu, they really should have told us that when we were seated so we didn't have waste time deciding what to order twice. Especially since many of us high tech types that regularly frequent this place don't get this particular holiday!

The four of us ordered the following from the ala carte menu:

Green Onion bread - there may have been some miscommunication of our order. I thought we ordered pancake but we ended up getting their 'thin' bread - which was actually about 1" thick. It was just OK, doughy and only slightly flavorful. The pancake probably would have been better.

Dry sauteed string beans - these were really tasty and a definite repeat order. Crunchy, garlicky, just the right amount of wok hay.

Sliced duck w/ vegetables - had a big problem w/ this dish. Not w/ the flavor which was OK, but it was about 10% little bitty slices of duck and 90% bean sprouts. WTF? This should've been listed in the vegetable, not poultry section. For the price it was a total rip off. Would not order this again.

Eggplant in spicy sauce - pretty good flavor, although the sauce seemed to have a bit too much cornstarch.

Curry chicken - decent curry flavor, on par w/ what you can get at other chinese places. There must be a standard way this gets prepared.

Both the eggplant and chicken were designated "spicy", but were only mildly so. Maybe they mean westernized spicy? At other restaurants (for instance Trend in MV), that designation really means something.

Overall, this visit was a mixed bag. I've had better experiences here in the past so will likely return occasionally, but will stick w/ the lunch specials.

Mommy ate...

housemade noodles

hand made noodles (thick and thin and in between) but with really good flavor. We also ordered what ended up being an enormous pot of tofu soup with choy that was just too much. Next time I want to watch what the regulars are ordering. Will return!

Mongolian Beef

Ive been going to Fatimas for 8 years and have not found a better deal than their lunch special. For around 5 dollars i can get a huge platter of mongolian beef, steamed rice, soup, and an eggroll. All which taste ridiculously good. Simply too good.
