Gillyflower Vegetarian is a new restaurant in place of where Ogi-Ramen was located. Completely vegetarian restaurant based off chinese cuisine with Taiwanese influences (I'm guessing btw). I'm not sure when they opened but judging from the interior, it looks like they are still moving things around. Menu prices are very cheap ranging from $6.50 - $8.50. I went with the tofu turkey and pressed tofu with an order of vegetarian dumplings.

tofu turkey (picture 5, 6, 7) - sliced turkey with gravy glazed down the sides of cut meat. It's fake meat so don't expect it to taste like turkey. They do a good job with making it look exactly like turkey breast. Taste is inline with what I've had at other restaurants and wondering if they all purchase from the same supplier? I couldn't imagine making mock meats in-house. Anyways, still very good.

pressed tofu - if you look at picture 5, it's the dish at the top left. Thin layers of tofu with the texture of a chewy omelet. Similar taste to the turkey with sesame oil flavoring.

tofu noodles - thin strips of tofu with celery and carrots. on the oily side but it worked out perfectly cuz I mixed it with the dry brown rice (picture 8). Made my own tofu bowl and enjoyed the combo.

greens - I think they were all mustard greens cooked by steam or blanching method. Bright green colors and firm textures. It's a mix of chinese broccoli and cabbage. Laced with oil and possibly coated with vegetarian broth. My favorite part of the meal.

The plate lunch also comes with brown rice and a soup. I wasn't too keen on the soup as I found it to be on the salty side. The brown rice was a complete opposite and had no flavor whatsoever. The brown rice only become eatable by mixing tofu noodles and steamed veggies into a veggie bowl.

fresh veggie dumplings (picture 9, 10) - hand made rolled packets filled with mixed vegetables. Doesn't get any fresher than this. I thought the dough was on the thick side and would have tasted much better with 1/2 the dough. Price is $6 for 8 pieces but she gave us 9.

Overall a respectable lunch. The price is right and service is very friendly. Gillyflower Vegetarian only accepts cash but lunch should easily cost you less than $10. I always welcome vegetarian cuisine and if you like trying new things, give Gillyflower Vegetarian a try.

I was a little disappointed to hear about Ogi-san ramen closing doors, as I thought it was a pretty decent place, and had been there a few times. When I heard that a vegetarian restaurant took its place, however, I grew excited again. There's just not enough vegetarian restaurants in the bay area. Especially good ones. This was pretty close to work, so more the better.

Gillyflower specializes in mock meat items, with a taiwanese slant. The menu was not terribly large, but they acompany it on your table with a picture menu that helped me get an idea of what i would be getting. The sides pictured reminded me of items I would see at Porridge Place in Cupertino. My hopes were high.

I went with the mock fish meal you see in picture #3. The 'noodles' were really thin tofu strips that were a bit flavorless but fresh and tasty nonetheless. My dish also came with brown rice mixture that was a bit tough to chew on, but when you mixed in items from the dish it tasted much better. The vegetables were solid. The white gelatinous item is a jelly that had the consistency of fat, but actually tasted pretty good, salty. The fish itself was a bit moist, and was like a salmon flavor but of course vegan. The sauce was tasty on it, and if I had twice as much of them I would have been satisfied. I ate them too quickly, as they were really good.

At the end of the meal, my mouth required lots of water, but the meal was quite tasty and tho it didn't fill me up, it left me with a positive experience of the place - and I have hopes to return again soon and try further items. I will report back with updates.
