Today was a solo visit as I had to run a bunch of errands. I was in the tea shop next door so decided to try out Guan Dong House. I enjoyed the previous Wolfe Cafe so was hoping to find something equally good.

I enter and the place isn't very packed. I am shown a table and given the menu. They have a large selection of items and it took me awhile to choose. After choosing I sat there. Thankfully I had an iPhone to tool around with. I wasted a good 10 minutes there before anyone came to my table. It could have been that they saw me busily working away on the phone, or they could have just been ignoring me. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and choose the former. It was a LONG time, especially for a single person table.

I settled on the Garlic eggplant lunch special, which includes soup and appetizer. Once placing my order, the service was snappy and friendly. I didn't have to wait very long for all of my food to arrive on a single tray. And there was a LOT of food. Especially for the price ($6) I felt this was a very good deal.

Soup was decent, maybe some meat soup base in there, I couldn't really tell. Lots of juicy tofu and egg. The appetizer plate was the oddest for my palette. It consisted of the tofu and veggie item (on the left side of the upper plate) which was tasty, but the stuff that looked like bacon (which was really a kind of thick jello type of substance) was just plain nasty. Just not my cup of tea so to speak. The eggplant was tasty, not as flavorful as other places, but they provided a lot and it indeed delicious. With the generous serving of rice I felt like I was getting a really good lunch for the price.

I would like to return and would bump up the score another half point if it weren't for the incredibly long wait I had before giving my order.

I stopped by over the weekend to celebrate a birthday. A&Js was the original group choice but they wait was long, so we opted our large group to Guan Dong House.

Service was decent. They ran out of cups for water but the waiter said he’d keep us in mind once the cups became available. Tea pots were refilled soon after the lids were flipped up.

We ordered two plates of shrimp, cabbage and eggs dumpling, cabbage and pork in clay pot, two orders of beef noodles, cumin seed chicken, Guan Dong pork with potatoes, shrimp fried rice, shrimp chow mien. After all the food came there were several complaints that the shrimp inside the dumplings looked raw, we informed one of the waiters and he took it back, we didn’t think we’d see it again but several minutes later they brought us out a new plate of dumplings. The notable dishes were the fried rice, which was greasy but super good and the beef noodle. The cabbage and pork in clay pot seemed a bit strange as the cabbage was very green and leafy and the pork was a little tough to bite into but the soup was excellent. It was more of a soup than a clay pot item.

At the end of the meal they brought us some small plates and plastic forks and a knife to allow us to cut the cake and distribute it among our group. Overall the meal was pretty good. We were in for some what of a surprise as it’s cash only, good thing everyone had enough cash on hand to pay for the meal. Final cost was around $100 pre tip.

Not sure why this place is so crowded. Food is decent, service is good and price is affordable although this probably wouldn’t be my first choice.

Note to Terry - I'm pretty sure that 'bacon' item was sliced and stewed pig ear. Congrats, you were closer then you thought.

Someone heated something in the office today and rather then smelling despicable it smelled incredible, I was forced out of my office and was on a mission to try out Choi's Kitchen in Santa Clara, obviously somewhere along the way I become distracted. Unplanned, I arrived a Guan Dong House, it was PACKED and there was a sample 'business' menu outside. Priced from $6-8/lunch I figured it was worth a try.

I was seated within seconds with tea, china, and chopsticks but they did not return to take my order for another 7-10 minutes. Maybe it was because I was returning emails on my phone, maybe it's custom? Beats me, I was super hungry by now. I settled on the salt + pepper fried fish for $6.95. I assumed it was something else, but what I received was close enough.

The lunches include two appitizers of the day, soup and rice along with your entree. There was hot & sour soup that tasted a bit watered down, and lack of consistency. Wasn't terrible, but just a bit bland. The stringed cold tofu appetizer was paired with stringed and stewed cold seaweed - neither had much taste, it was more of an experiment with textures. Finally I got to the fish, they looked great, and piled high (You do get your buck's worth in substance here), however with the first bite I was let down. Full of air and batter, the fish was almost non-existent. I'm also not sure if there was any salt or pepper on these as I had to drown most of them in the provided chili sauce (which was also watery).

The one exceptional item was the tea, that stuff is good. Other then that I can't say I had a miserable experience here, I'm willing to try other items on the menu. For what you pay the portions are ginormous, and decent at best...just not 'oh my god' good.

7/10

pewter17 ate...

pigs ears

the jello-bacon is actually pigs' ears (oink). it's a standard side dish/appetizer thinly sliced and served cold. ppl eat it for texture more than taste.
