Same odd mixture of Middle Eastern and Vietnamese sandwich goodness

This is my second visit to Sorento Cafe since they changed from Langs Cafe. Langs used to be a Vietnamese sandwich cafe, which is why the new place is an odd mixture of middle eastern and vietnamese sandwiches. I have yet to go with the vietnamese sandwiches here, yet, since I am so addicted to the standard sandwiches here.

Todays visit was the Veggie Sorrento sandwich. At $4.95, its a good deal. It won't fill you up completely, but it is made from super high quality ingredients and tastes simply fantastic. These sandwiches are so good, I am convinced that if this place was on Murphy (in Sunnyvale) or in downtown Mountain View it would be super popular. I'm sure the prices would be a bit higher too.

My veggie sorrento was stock full of various veggies like tomato, red bell pepper, eggplant, mushroom, salad, and slathered with pesto. Mmmm, so good.

Now to the bad part. I remember on my last visit it was stuffy inside, super hot. And I had to wait a super long time. So this visit I made sure to time it. From the time to placing my order to receiving my sandwich was 6-7 minutes. Ouch. Also it is difficult to wait inside during hot days. There must be no A/C and it just feels a bit hot in there. Fresh air needed! And finally there is only one guy (the owner) making the sandwich, taking your money, etc. No one else working there.

So those are a bit small on the gripe-scale though, as this guy can sure make a sandwich.

Some have described this place as charming. That it is not, a display fridge only occupied with unprepared cheese, a bread shelf with pre-packaged wheat and a beverage container hidden near the back with a small selection of teas and juices.

To be frank I was on my way to Pizza My Heart when I started to wonder about my dining habits. I was caught by a huge "half soup/salad & sandwich for $4.50" sign and figured, well a sandwich sounds better. After reading a BLT review pasted in their window I decided to order that on sourdough.

I think the guy actually cooked the bacon there on the spot and brought out the sandwich in what seemed like 10 minutes later. Comparable to Neli's up the street, but I believe it's cheaper and closer which will make up for the slightest bit of inferiorities. If I had to choose I'd go to Neli's, but Sorento is convenient. It was good, I'm willing to return. They also have banh mi, which is a curiousity.

Came here for chicken pho based on a jatboard recommendation. Buffboy was right on the mark, it was pretty good and a great deal at $4.50. The soup stock itself had a deep chicken flavor that only comes from hours of simmering, but what set it apart was a touch of ginger flavor which I found very appealing. It came w/ a nice helping of noodles (asked for extra per buffboy's recommendation), several tasty pieces of chicken and the usual condiments.

This place has recently changed hands, I remember coming here a while ago for a pretty good panini. The new ownership added pho and banh mi to the existing choices. Got a glimpse of one and it looked bigger than the banh mi at Lee's - which would make it a steal at 3 bucks. I'll definitely be back to try either that or their beef pho.

The ladies that run the place are really nice, I just hope that can make a go of it. This location has been the kiss of death and now times are tough and the anchor tenant in this plaza (mervyns) is gone. If you're in the area and have 5 bucks to spend, rather than filling the corporate coffers of lee's or pizza my heart, why not give this family run place a chance while it's still around?

There's still a 'sorento cafe' sign on the building but this place is now called 'little cafe'. Just look for the big red 'pho ga' sign facing the parking lot.
