My cousins were in town and wanted to take them to a special lunch at Val's Burger in Hayward. They're closed on Sundays so I had a backup plan in Emeryville but that restaurant fell through and accidently landed at Arizmendi for a quick snack. I had remembered that Lois the Pie Queen was nearby and took 2nd lunch. I know, I know...2nd lunch?

We arrived around noon and most of the tables were taken. We grabbed 4 chairs at the counter and our sweetie waitress gave us the best service. Service wise, these guys get a 10. Very personal and make you feel like family. No joke.

They only accept cash so don't forget to bring the green. I made the mistake and trekked across the street to the "special" liquor store and did some sort of shady cash advance to land a $20 spot.

Since I just got done with amazing pizza at Arizmendi, I thought about going small with the fried chicken and waffles. Hahah.

Fried chicken is very good. Light on the seasonings and batter. Chicken was thoroughly cooked yet juicy. Large pieces and I'm still wondering why it goes well with the waffles? The waffle wasn't as toasted as I wanted it but still does the job. I've had chicken and waffles about a dozen times through the United States and I'd rank these at about an 8.5. It's definitely worth ordering.

I honestly had no intentions on finishing the meal, I just wanted to try it out and probably take the rest home. Well...that plan kinda failed because I kept eating and eating and finished it. I was going to explode.

My cousin Jim was in the same boat. He was completely stuffed on this 2nd lunch and couldn't take anymore food. Chris, who I think is either the owner or owner's son passed by and asked us about dessert. We both said we were going to pass out and die because we were stuffed. He didn't know this was our second lunch and came by a couple of minutes later with 1/2 slices of sweet potato pie.

We couldn't turn down free pie. Jim and I powered through the pies. Although I'm about 120% at capacity, this was one heck of a pie. Easy 9.

Food is great and service is THE BEST. Lois The Pie Queen is pure jatbar gold. Already looking forward to a return visit.

I heard about Lois the Pie Queen indirectly from an NYU Alumni discussion list (an email address referencing this site - http://www.piequeens.com/). The website made Lois sound interesting enough that I figured Jatbar needed to review it. My family was on our way to Ikea (well its not the closest Ikea to our house, but I figured might as well do a Jatbar review and hit up Ikea at the same time.

We arrive kind of late (around 11am) so the place wasn't too packed. We got a table quickly and one of the employees quickly brought over some hot wheel cars for my sons to play with. Nice touch. We quickly notice that they are cash only so go through our wallets and verify that we have enough money to cover the meal. We are good, so away we order.

I go with the Spinach and cheese omelette. My wife goes for the Salmon Croquettes (the meatball looking things) and my oldest son goes for the toasted cheese sandwich.

They quickly ask for coffee refills and mill around constantly with the coffee (we didn't get coffee for this meal). The food is brought out fairly quickly and it looks amazing. Unlike the crappy picture, the omelette looked amazing. The service size wasn't super huge like Country Way. It was definitely a more realistic portion. The quality of the food was much improved compared to normal diner food. The prices may be a bit high, but you are getting more than you pay for here. I have never had a better spinach omelette. The cheese and spinach were both top notch.

The breakfasts came with hash browns. They were a bit more peppery and spicy than normal. It was a bit unique flavor and tasted quite good. We also had bread options for the breakfast - and we took the only thing we could - the biscuits. The biscuits here are amazing. If you are not into sweet, though, you may want hold off on them. They were borderline TOO sweet, but were irresistable to all of us. We finished these easily. All in all the breakfast MORE than filled us up, but we had to try the pies - as its in the name!

We were told by the kind waitress that the most popular pies were the Sweet Potato and the Lemon Ice Box. My son wanted Apple so he ordered that and my wife went with the Lemon. The Apple pie was pretty darn good. The crust was a bit plain tasting but the filling was absolutely top notch. The real winner, as predicted, was the lemon pie. oh my god, it was out of this world. Even if you dont like lemon pie, you will probably enjoy this. I notice they sell whole pies and if I lived closer, I would be bringing a lemon home every few weeks.

If you are going to Ikea, you owe it to yourself to make a quick detour to Lois, but definitely mind the hours as they have somewhat short hours and bring cash.

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 5/27/2007 - 9 Rating: Another great meal today. Almost got burned with the cash-only thing again, but otherwise enjoyed the Mexican Scramble (a bit spicey, and quite flavorful) and the Ice Box Lemon Pie (perfect like a frozen lemon cheesecake). Hash Browns were perfect (good pepper flavor, finished them all) as well as the biscuits (crispy buttery goodness). Can't wait to return again.
