I've been to Banh Thai in Fremont before (there is also a Newark location). In fact I was here at this location when it was Furama restaurant (before they moved to Warm Springs, and eventually closed down). So I was eager to finally add it to Jatbar.

For starters I ordered the Mee-Krob, which were deep-fried noodles with a sweet and sour sauce on it that tasted VERY much like Kettle Corn. It was a good combination, but probably not for appetizer - it felt more like a dessert. It was very tasty however.

For main dish, we ordered the Thai Eggrolls, the Crab Fried Rice, and the Black Pepper and Garlic Tofu.

The place wasn't that full, maybe a third of the way full. It just seemed like the waitstaff was under-staffed. Waits were long for everything, no water-refills. It could have just been a bad night, so can't knock them too much for that.

I didn't sample the eggrolls, but the Crab fried rice was VERY rich and tasty. The black pepper and garlic tofu was OK. It was a good non-tofu tasting dish that went well with the fried rice.

While Banh Thai was good, especially for Fremont - it pales a bit compared to other Thai places in Mountain View, Sunnyvale, and Cupertino. The flavors kind of ran together and didn't explode in your mouth like the concoctions at Blue Mango. Combined with the rather lackluster service I experienced, I mark them down a bit.

I surely will be back and I hope to improve my rating next time.

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 11/13/2005 - 8 Rating: Made a return visit. This place is actually pretty darn good for Fremont. The Crab fried rice is spot on. Even my 18 month old was devouring the rice excitedly. I went with the vegetarian special 'Duck Jay' which has tofu that resembled the tofu I would find at Sogo but without as much grease. Very tasty. The menu is large enough that everyone should be able to easily find something that will appeal to them.

Penang Beef Curry, Pad Tai, Tom Yum Gai, Thai FR

Overall a decent Thai restaurant. The food and service are alright. The food came in a timely fashion and was fresh. My wife likes the chicken & spinach with peanut sauce. I usually go for the nicely balanced curries.

Yellow Chicken Curry

Super fragrant! The scent of coconut wafted from the container when I opened it. I think it would be better with plain rice as opposed to the Curry Crab Rice.

Tom Ka Gai

Lovely - perfect for a chilly winter day. The sourness was tamed by the coconut milk. Large chunks of chicken and mushroom. Wish they wouldn't slice the lemongrass so thinly. It can be a nasty surprise in a sublime mouthful.

Penang Curry

The only dish to be completely emptied. Either the vegetarians were super hungry or it was super good. It was okay, not spectacular.
