Interesting mix of Taiwanese/Japanese cuisine in this teppan restaurant.

I went to Champion Teppanyaki not sure what to expect. I knew there would be Teppan dining, but I never had heard about the place from anyone, so was a little anxious to provide a first impression review.

We get there, and are immediately seated at a Teppan table. I checked out the beer selections, and opted for the large bottle of Taiwanese Beer. It was brought out quickly with a glass. It was pretty darn tasty, almost like a Corona.

The menu was quite confusing to read and the wife and I had a hard time trying to figure out how the dishes were organized and what came with my dinner order. Half-Lobsters came with most dishes it seemed. Same with a selection of other items, and then you had a choice of 1 out of 3 meats to serve as the main course. This was a little disconcerting as I wanted a non-beef-chicken-lamb entree and had no luck finding something on the hard-to-read menu. There was a vegetarian offering which consisted of Tofu, yet I shrank away from that, since all the food would be prepared on the same grill at the same time anyway. So I went with the lamb, prepared Medium.

A small dish was brought out one after the other (1st soup which was good, salad which was OK, etc). It took forever to get through the dinner since each item took so long to arrive. Much of the time was spent waiting. A dinner that would take an hour at Nijo would take 2 hours at Champion.

The lobsters were finally prepared as well as the other items (non-main-course-items). The fried rice was VERY stale tasting, and had pork mixed in. Ugh. Very bad especially compared to the wonderful stuff at Nijo. Very greasy yet no flavor - I don't understand.

The lobster was done and put on my plate (still waiting on the main course). The lobster was easy to get at since it was split in half, but it was positively gooey. I could barely eat it and questioned its safety being that it was so soft and undercooked.

My lamb was finally prepared with the grilled vegetables. The vegetables were pretty tasty and I gobbled them up quickly. The lamb arrived and while I wasn't going to eat that much of it anyway, I took a bite and it was blood red. Ugh. Another undercooked item. Had a bit of flavor but I just couldn't chew this very easily especially with all the blood coming out of it.

Someone else ordered the tofu option on the menu and it was just a square slab of tofu cooked up a little bit and thrown on a plate. It looked VERY unsatisfying and I noticed the lady who ordered it only ate maybe half of it.

Overall, the price was decent compared to Nijo, $28 for a lot of food and 2+ hours of dining, but I left very disastisfied with the experience, especially for the hard to read menu, the slow speed of the meal, and the lack of veggie options.

Go for the experience. A good place to take a date as its some what entertaining. They play with your food while cooking it and then serve it to you on your plate.

The lunch prices and dinner prices are different. Dinner being more expensive of course, but the portions are pretty much the same. There are several locations by now and Ive been to the one in Cupertino as well as Fremont.

If you decide to try this place out, expect to spend some money as the cheaper meals will not fill you up. Choose a combination with steak and seafood or steak and some other meat. Go ahead and order the fried rice as well or the fried udon (which is surprisingly good).

Your meal is served with soup (some type of home made cream of corn or cream of something) and salad (choice of dressing is usually ginger or thousand island). When the cook finally arrives he verifies who ordered what and starts cooking. This wait process can be short or long depending on how packed the place is.

If you only order the beef you probably wont get served till the end as usually the fried rice is cooked first (enough for two people), then the seafood is cooked, then the steak is cooked to your liking (choice of teriyaki sauce or pepper sauce), then the veggies are cooked for you (veggies are free with purchase of your meal and tasty as well), finally the beef (cheapest item on the menu) is cooked. White rice is free of charge, but you need to ask for it. Theres some gelatin desert or red been soup served after dinner.

I believe in the Fremont location they have a Karaoke package during dinner where guests can eat first then go to the bar/lounge to sing. (thats for all you American Idol wannabes).

Prices:

Lunch: 9.50 to 20.00

Dinner: 11.00 and up

The more you pay the more you get to eat. I suggest eating a light snack beforehand or grab some desert afterwards somewhere nearby.

Steak & Shrimp Dinner

This was my first Teppanyaki experience. I was here for the grand opening and it seemed like a nice place so I came back 6mo later. The prices seemed higher and I don't think service was as good. The chef was on auto. Go to Nijo castle instead.
