Ive been to Kaspers a number of times when I lived in Fremont. Im always on the lookout for trying hot dogs since hot dogs is my 4th favorite junk food item (fyi, heres my listing - burritos, burgers, pizza, and finally hot dogs). In judging my hot dogs, heres what I look for

meat - is it salty, oily, casing (snap), all beef. I like them boiled, barbeque, or Grey Papaya style (slow cooked over a grill). NEVER MUST THE DOG BE CUT IN HALF OR PUNCTURED.

bun - moist and not soggy. I prefer them steamed but occasionally I like them toasted

toppings - I only like chopped onions, tomatoes, mustard, and sometimes cheese.

chili - it better not taste like hormel chili or anything canned

Well, how did Kaspers do?

The meat did not have any snap at all. To defend Kaspers, we hit them late in the day so those dogs must have been sitting in water for awhile. Dog wasnt firm but the meat was ok.

Bun was moist but my chili dog was a sad sight. They covered my entire dog with chili and cheese, bun was soggy. You couldnt even see what was under the chili. And to make matters worse, their chili taste like canned chili. I would not order this again.

Toppings were average. Tomatoes were overipe and cut thinly, I prefer places that use a beef or ribbed tomato. Onions were sliced, cmon, you need to dice them like everyone else.

Tonights experience rates in at a 7 but previous visits were much better. Ill give them an 8 but definitely want a rematch...

I have been coming to a Kaspers restaurant for as long as I can remember (they are a bay-area only chain of restaurants). And even now I usually dont eat meat but I make an exception on the rare occasion I go to Kaspers. The dogs are that good. I think it may even be a smidge above Happy Hound as the place seems to be a little cleaner. The dogs have the snap and the buns are moist and fresh. I usually order the cheese dog (cheese tastes great here) or the Kraut dog (nothing incredible about the kraut except that its kraut). The prices are a little high for what youre getting but were talking history here. This place has stood the test of time and youre buying into it. Glad to see that Kaspers is keeping it local too.

Polish Dog

Tried this place for a Sunday noon meal and I won't be back. Bun is cheap, soft, untoasted, flavorless. Toppings are unremarkable. Boiled dog has no snap. They ran out of sauerkraut and wouldn't resupply until Monday. Uh, what?!
