I have a fondness for all things German since I spent a good deal of schooling speaking German and lived in Bavaria one summer during college. Upon returning to the Bay Area and finding my first job in Fremont, I would eat here quite often and really enjoyed this place. I have been meaning to review this place for a long time, but I wanted to review it with my favorite sandwich from the old days. The reuben. I *love* sauerkraut and as can be imagined, they do it well here. The pastrami is also fantastic here, very little fat in it. Anyway, that was my memory of it.

So I walked into here for the first time in 10+ years over the weekend to order my reuben. I figured my system was up for it, after sustaining the Carnitas Challenge just a few days earlier. This will definitely be my yearly intake on meat this week.

I look over the menu, just to make sure my sandwich is still on there - it is, and order the full reuben (they are also sold by the half sandwich). My sons share a turkey sandwich.

While the sandwich is being made, I check out the mini german grocery store inside. There are loads of german sweets, beer, and other foodstuffs. For any fan of german, particularly southern german & austrian, cuisine - you be in heaven.

Sandwich is ready and its smaller than I remember - but I have experience Rogers Deli and Bagel Street Cafe in the meantime - but looks SOLID. Ingredients are all super fresh and the meat still looks lean and tasty. I bite into it and am in awe. This is one of the best sandwiches I have had in a long time. I am not talking about being super full or a good bargain - as its pricey. This is just a GREAT sandwich. There is a reason that Rita has been here 30+ years making sandwiches. They are just awesome. I sat back after gourging quickly on that superb Reuben. I don't see how people can across the street to the Fremont Hub and order Togos, when something of this magnitude is so readily nearby.

Schmeckt gut!

My friend & I went and we split a curry bratwurst & a German bratwurst. The German brat was better because it came with sauerkraut & melted swiss. I was under the impression that the curry brat would be a sausage with curry flavors infused INTO the sausage. However, it's just a regular German brat with curry powder and sauce (ketchup mixed with curry) on top. Not that great.... I heard the ones in Germany are good though!

Service was quick today because there were two ladies. I've always heard of Kinder Surprises (chocolate egg with a toy inside) and yummy & fun they are but they're a tad pricey, $2.25 each.
