Stopped by here as soon as I saw the sign up. This location has been populated by numerous restaurants over the years, some I have visited, some not. The location is great, right across from Ohlone College, but the success of these places can be hit or miss as Mission downtown can be a ghost town most of the time.

With that being said, I hope they do well. I found the service, even in these initial days since opening, to be top class. There were a good number of people in the place trying it out, and all were given excellent attention by the wait staff - waters refilled quickly, food was constantly being brought out, and suggestions were being offered. You could tell these folks have been doing this awhile - pure professional.

I wasn't too hungry, so stuck to some basics to get a good guage. My wife wanted to order a beer but they hadn't received liquor license yet. Hopefully soon. The naan was fantastic with a bit of a berry? aftertaste. It was unique and for that I was pleased. Rice was by the numbers, standard white. The saag paneer was excellent. I received a pretty big portion with my dinner (which also included a small salad, the rice, and naan for $4 extra). A good deal, for sure, as I was unable to finish and brought food home for later consumption.

TV was going, yet not ultra loud thankfully, showing indian TV and music content. Place appeared clean, except for the side area just outside the window that seemed to be remnants from recent construction work. Sadly, the buffet is not offered for dinner, yet that makes sense when traffic is much reduced (I'm sure) compared to college student lunchtime. (btw, this lunchtime buffet is 7 days).

My wife and I both look forward to returning (with a larger appetite) to sample more of this menu. So far, I like!

I highly highly recommend Royal Taj in Campbell on Candem Ave (near hwy 17)... 1350 Camden Ave
Campbell, CA 95008

The Chicken Tikka Masala is to die for! The creamiest sauce, with the perfect balance of spice, tomato and flavor. My only complain is the portion size. You get plenty of sauce but its a little light on the chicken. I usually order the Tandori Chicken to add to the sauce. (Also excellent - especially since it is cooked in a real tandoor. Just a squeeze of lemon and it's perfect.)

The Vegetable Pakora is also a must order. Crisp and delciously seasoned... and plenty of veggies, not just onion like a lot of places. Large serving - hard for two to finish. You get 2 sauces to dip - the tamarrind (my fav) and a tasty mint sauce.

We also will order the Channa Masala, Muttar Paneer, Vegetable Korma or Aloo Gohbi - great sides that complement steamed basmati rice with sliced almonds and peas - their standard rice. My husband will also order an eggplant dish that's again, right on for flavor, but I'm just not crazy for the texture. (sorry, can't remember the name).

We've also sampled several of their naan breads and you can choose from several stuffed or plain. Warm, fresh tasting and lightly yeasty. Very good and excellent at picking up sauces from your plate.

They also have a 2nd Restaurant in Santa Cruz off Ocean St.

We live in South San Jose and it's worth the 20 minute drive... ;)

Friendly staff, quick service, I've enjoyed my dine-in and take out experiences equally. I ordered a combo dinner for my parents when we dined in once and they were happily introduced to indian. Well priced, except portion sizes on to-go could be bigger. When I think Indian it's Royal Taj - and I've experienced many Indian places in my day - this is my favorite.

.... On our 2nd wedding anniversary 7/3 (2007) my husband and I were jonzin' for Indian. We both ordered one of their sample dinners... WOW! It fabulous array of dishes, flavors and so much food. It was a terrific dinner, yet a tad pricey. That's really the only area they could improve on. I'm a loyal fan. Been a customer for the last 6-7 years.

Grub on!

I wanted to make sure chicken tikka masala was served. It was! Freakin' great! Their naan had this unique sweetness and a hint of sour in it. Crispy and fluffy. They can special make other naan, as requested by another patron when I dined there.
