Vals Burger has been serving one of the best burgers in the Bay Area since 1958. The restaurant is a classic style diner thats serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts. Hidden in the sidestreets in Hayward, it can be difficult to find off the 880 freeway. Be patient, the drive is well worth it.

The burger comes in 3 sizes; 1/3, 1/2, 1lb (Baby, Mama, and Papa Burger). Fresh condiments, onions, relish, pickels are at every table for fixing your burger (Cheese and Tomatoes are extra). The beef is very lean, crumbly texture, lightly salted and very little grease. Definitely some type of serloin or heroin addictive. The best part is they way they cook it...the real way...CHARBROILED, that lovely charred taste!!

The fries and onion rings are a 10...crunchy and tender inside. They come in large baskets that can be shared between 4 people and it only costs about $3!!!

Dont look around too much or you'll find yourself staring at the shakes and rootbeer floats. Just imagine a tall fountain glass filled to the rim with slightly melted ice cream AND the mixing container halfway filled with MORE ICE CREAM. We didn't have enough room in our stomachs to try one, but just looking at one, they had to be good, everything else was. There will be a next time for me and I WILL TRY ONE.

Dont miss out on Vals Burgers, my favorite Bay Area burger place so far. For the price, quality, atmosphere, and quantity, Vals is a tough place to beat. I would prefer it over Kirks, Clarks, Happy Hound, Barneys, Fuddruckers, Ben Franks, Red Robbin, Nations, Joes Cable Car, and so on.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 8/18/2004 - 9.5 Rating: Made my return tonight...no complaints to make, I was extremely satisfied with my burger. If you think you have a big appetite, go for the double papa burger...haha 2lbs of meat!!

OK, I thought Fentons was a tough place to find. Vals may have beat it out. Its definitely not on the main drag.

We went on a Wednesday so it was just moderately packed. We waited about 15 minutes for a table. We were seated and quickly gave our orders. I went with the Mama burger medium, a vanilla shake, and shared the order of fries.

The Burger arrived fairly quickly and it looked decently sized. It was half lb of qualilty beef. I paid extra for the cheese and the tomato. Pickles were served in a big jug on the table. GOTTA love that. Other condiments included sliced onions were as well.

I don't eat meat burgers much (maybe 3 - 4 times a year) but I gotta say this is the best burger I've had in a restaurant in the Bay Area. Its a shade lower in quality than my favorite hamburger, Cozys in NYC. Its not as crumbly, but the taste is pretty much there. And Cozys normal burger is like Vals Papa burger I'm sure. The buns were lightly toasted and full of freshness and flavor. Definitely among the best. Almost as moist as In N Outs, but of course larger. If you are used to Red Robin size burgers you might be a little let down by the Vals Mama size burger. Go with the Papa if you think you're hungry.

The fries tasted a lot better than they looked, and they gave you a LOT. So 1 order of fries will hold off at least 3 people.

I ordered a vanilla shake and they do give you at least 2 glasses worth of it with every milkshake order. How did it taste? I was a little let down. Unless you like the sour taste of milk powder in your shake, I don't think it will appeal to many people. Maybe I'm just being overly harsh having recently come from Fentons. I would not try their shakes again. My rating score does not need to reflect the shakes as the burgers is what its all about at Vals. You cannot go wrong.

The waitresses at Val's are very grumpy. They rush you and if you don't order within 15 seconds of them asking you what you want, it looks as if they're just going to walk away and never come back.

There's definitely a nostalgic and homey feel to this diner that probably keeps people coming again and again. The burgers are fresh but I think it's odd that the condiments just sit out on the tables all day. One order of fries is enough to comfortably feed at least two people. Oh and the baby burger fills me up!

Parking is not that great. Try not to hit anyone else.

BAC ate...

Papa burger and fries

A medium burger should be pink inside, not raw! I was so disappointed. They obviously cooked it too fast and hot. The outside was well done but the inside was raw meat. I must have gone during amateur hour. Should I try again? The fries were soggy 2.
