Located in downtown Kona (look for it near the northern end of Alii before it wraps up Palani. Scandinavian Shave Ice is located mere steps from the ocean and, not surprisingly, fairly close to an ABC Store.

We discovered it when we saw the long line going out the door. During our entire stay there (we ordered and ate inside) the line was always out the door.

Among other treats like ice cream, etc, they offer two sizes of Shaved Ice - small and large. The small (as pictured) is gargantuan and will be more than sufficient for a human. I think I saw one person order the large and it was embarrassing. An option in the shave ice is to get a scoop of ice cream embedded inside of it. Its your standard soft-serv style ice cream, and I saw a few people order this - but for me it would have been too much to eat at the time. I stuck with a small shaved ice with coconut and pineapple flavor. The flavor selection was impressive and everyone will be sure to find something they want.

The guy takes your request and immediately starts shaving the ice. The workers there are younger (late teens early 20s) and have an urban attitude that was fun to talk with - and they were quick to talk with everyone that enters.

A few minutes later I'm sitting down enjoying my shave ice. Others took them with them (though be sure you aren't carrying too much stuff to handle this monstrous delight). There was seating outside on benches, as well as on a grassy median (where I took the exterior shot) or just a few steps more and you're on the beach or rock wall divider to the ocean. Its a great location to sit back and people watch and enjoy the sun. When we were there, it happened to be raining - but even that rain was light and welcome in the heat.

The flavors were fresh and rich - though not overdone. The ice was freshly cut from blocks in front of you so basically it was a win-win situation. The price was small but the value was large. Scandinavian Shaved Ice is now on my list of must-visit places each time I'm in Kona now.
