Today we celebrated Doug's birthday by using a 3 year old gift certificate to take us out, I'm all for it. We were worried they would accept it but it was all good when they gave us a green light. The free meal deal was at Akane in Los Altos. We used one of our favorite map service courtesy of Google and guess what, we got lost. The directions said the restaurant would be 7 feet from Satura Cakes. Well...the restaurant is down the street in the opposite directory about 300 feet to the right. If you find yourself wondering in a parking lot off of 3rd street, look for the sign in picture 3.

The restaurant is clean with a large sushi bar towards the entrance. They had 2 sushi chefs behind the counter with no one sitting at the bar. Don't let this discourage you from trying the sushi. I hear their sushi is excellent but will have to try another day. We were quickly seated and menus brought out. The place was half full when we arrived and within a couple of minutes, the restaurant started to fill up. Noise level wasn't too loud with most people keeping the conversation level to a minimum and don't recall any obnoxious cell phones going off.

There were 4 of us today with a gift certificate of $50, that means a lunch special with a drink. This review will only be for the lunch specials and not the sushi. For lunch, I ordered a large asahi beer, shared edamame, and tonkatsu donburi. The wait was about 10 minutes for the meal to arrive.

tonkatsu donburi (image 9) - deep fried breaded pork cutlet over sticky rice. The pork is normally thin and cut into small pieces. Served over rice with a fried egg, sliced green onions, grilled onions, and nori (seaweed). I love getting this dish but a lot of places will KILL this dish with an insane amount of soy sauce. Akane cooked my meal just right. The breading was slightly crunchy and not soggy like the rest of the competition. Pork cutlet was large, barely enough to fit in the bowl. I can eat this everyday, it's sooooo good.

Good service, good food, good company, today's lunch was a blast. Prices are average to above average and haven't a clue what the prices are for sushi. Although I only shelled out $5 for the entire meal, I would easily pay my way for this meal. Akane serves a good meal and if you want the killer lunch/birthday combo, finish it off with a green tea cream puff at Satura Cakes.
