We accidently ran into Satura Cakes during lunch. It's been on our wish list for awhile and when it comes to pastry shops, we'll always make time. The pastry shop is one of the nicest bakeries we've seen. Presentation of breads and pastries is well laid out and rivals one of my favorite places, La Patisserie in Cupertino.

With too many beautiful sweets to choose from, I stood there for a good 10 minutes before deciding what I wanted. In a perfect world, I'd be able to sample everything in the glass counter for the week. In reality, I had $15 to spend on goodies with less than 1 hour on the clock.

ham and cheese (image 7) - can be ordered hot or cold. If you get it hot, they throw this buttery creation into the toaster. The croissant is airy and crackles with every bite. The cheese is crunchy too! The ham is half a slice but you don't want to distract from the star of the dish...the thinly layered dough. People on diets should be warned, this roll contains a staggering amount of butter so watch out. Super good.

cream puffs (image 8, 9, 10) - ever since Beard Papa opened up their store in San Francisco, we've been searching for the best cream puff. The puffs at Satura Cakes are expensive at $3 each but you can score a deal by ordering $5 for $10. The puffs are about the size of a cupcake but lighter in weight. Each puff is powdered with a coating of sugar over the moonlike crust. Crunchy on the outside with thin layers of eggy dough. In the center is a rich smooth cream which I believe is much better than Beard Papas. It's less sweet and the vanilla had bits of vanilla bean in the mix. I agree with Terry on the pastry part, Beard Papas edges out Satura Cakes. I think today's batch was overcooked with the bottom part of the puff nearly burnt. I would order it again but with the price of $3 each, it nearly forces the purchase of 5 puffs.

I feel somewhat guilty issuing an 8 to Satura Cakes with as much creativity and talent as they have.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 5/22/2007 - 8.5 Rating: Ok, I went back today after our lunch at Akane. There were 4 of us and everyone thought their dessert was great. Still a little expensive but possibly because of the high quality of ingredients. I went with the green tea cream puff and wow, I nearly melted in my seat.

My review will be short since I just sampled the cream puffs. They were $3 a pop, so not cheap by any means, and you are encouraged to get 6 for $10 in the box (well, food-aholics like us are encouraged lol). Bottom line: I found the insides to be higher quality than Beard Papa, but the crust was not as good as BP. It was a little on the tougher side than the melt in your mouth goodness of Beard Papa. The cream was not as sweet, so you could experience the flavor of the cream better at Satura. I would definitely return to Satura for the cream puffs. Good stuff.

wangela ate...

chocolate cake and fruit tea

The location in Palo Alto on University is disappointing. Half the pleasure in dessert is the presentation; the service was sloppy and not knowledgeable about their teas - a far cry from the shop's Japanese parent "Anniversaire".

Bippy ate...

Chocolate raspbery tart

There is another on University in Paolo Alto. Pretty good, but some of the cakes are a little candy flavoured. There are better cheaper alternatives. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
