Follow the smell of smoke on University Ave and you'll find Los Gatos Meats and Smokehouse. It's a small butcher shop/deli creating sandwiches made to order. Bread is delivered every morning so you're not getting the standard market stuff. The smoked meats and sauces are made onsite with sandwich prices range from $5.49 to $6.49.

My co-worker Drew ordered the Jackie Special (image 8, 9); Smoked Turkey, Smoked Cheddar, Smoked Bacon, and Avocado. I traded my sandwich half for his.

I ordered the flagship sandwich called the Super Hero (image 10, 11) on Dutch. It's definitely a sandwich to make your heart skip a beat. The sandwich comes decorated with

avocado - not sure why this is on the sandwich as the bbq sauce overwhelms everything else. I love avocados but the use here has no impact to the overall taste.

cheddar cheese - these are REAL slices that are chopped from a big block of cheese. They were much thicker than your average sandwich shop and some of it melted on the bbq. None of that cheap waxy texture, it was semi-brittle, strong tasting cheese, great stuff.

bacon - smoked and cut extra thick. You'll have to do some chewing on this but their bacon is a top 5 for me. Some of the best bacon you'll get anywhere. They don't skimp out on the servings either. With bacon like this, I'd be interested to make a club sandwich out of this.

tri-tip - the meat is excellent, it's not too fatty, and had a deep smokey flavor. The semi-sweet bbq sauce is one hell of a mess. It might be a good idea to leave the sandwich in the wrapper to avoid staining your shirt forever. They need to serve a tri-tip plate with potatoes, and french bread. Their bbq kicks serious ass.

bread - dutch crunch was a good combination with the bbq sauce and tri-tip. I found it much better than the sweet roll and less bready?

If I had to compare the Jackie Special against the Super Hero. I'd say the Super Hero wins by a landslide. The Jackie Special had too much bread to the sandwich. I found myself peeling layers of the bread to lessen the effect. Their turkey is awesome when you can get a full bite of it. Both sandwiches have the freshest ingredients and are of very large portion sizes. I'd say the Jackie Special is an 8 and Super Hero is a 9. I know it averages 8.5 but will bump the overall score to a 9 considering their beef jerky and prices are outstanding.

If you still have room after the sandwich, browse the cooler section and buy buffalo burgers, chorizo, smoked bacon, or even buy the freshly made beef jerky. I took home 2 packages of beef jerky and shared with my coworkers. They all said the stuff was legit. Los Gatos Meat and Smokehouse offers other services like smoking fish/meats for you and processing wild game. Meat lovers, YOU will LOVE this place.

The Super Hero

I went there for lunch today and got the super hero. It was alright I thought. What impressed me was all the specialty meats they had there. Lots of homemade jerky. They even had ostridge, buffalo and elk patties. Thought that was pretty cool.
