Large Chinese restaurant off 880 that serves up a big dim sum on weekends.

I have been to ABC Seafood restaurant a few times, always for a weekend dim sum. The place is large and appears to be quite popular, as if you show up past about 11:30am you will be waiting for awhile.

Overall, though the selection is disappointing. Offering only a few of the basic dim sum items (but plenty of them), you quickly find yourself running out of things to order. There is a large selection of shrimp items, few vegetable items, some pastries items and otherwise, not much. What they do have is pretty good (not China Stix or Mings quality, but still good), but alas after visiting powerhouses like Mings, you are left wondering how ABC could be as popular as it is.

I went with a few co workers for lunch at ABC Seafood in Foster City. The history behind ABC Seafood is that they used to be very popular when dim sum was not that common. Over the years their prices has remained high but the quality has gone down and the selection has gone down somewhat. I think their selections are very basic, if you like the standard steamed items and the standard baked items you will like ABC. There are definitely more steamed items than baked items. They will make it special request in the back if you specifically ask for the bakes/fried items. We requested the shrimp balls several times. The prices are fairly high considering the selections offered. Most items that should be rated as small or medium items are charges at medium and large items.

We ordered the chicken fried rice, which was a bit bland, two orders of har gaw, shrimp wrapped in rice noodle, two orders of shrimp balls, red bean sesame ball, Chinese chicken tamale, shu mai, Shanghai steamed dumplings. Total bill was around $50 for four after tax and tip.

I like how they serve most of the dim sum items hot. Some items such as the steamed dumpling and shu mai were warm when we first sat down but the later items came out steaming hot. Avoid the steamed dumplings as there is nothing authentic about them. The tamale, shrimp balls and har gaw are fairly good. The dim sum items here tend to be smaller compared to other places.

Service is good as our water was refilled whenever empty and our tea pot was refilled when empty. There is always someone around to request for hot sauce or utensils. The Foster City restaurant has an order out section. The restaurant was never packed enough where there was a line waiting for lunch, but in the old days there would definitely be a line for lunch at ABC. The restrooms are clean with private roomed stalls; its like going to the bathroom in your own home, probably cleaner than what you have at home.

Lines are usually long and service is sub-par (unless you're my boss who knows the manager). Food is pretty good, but could be better. I'm echoing pretty much what Terry and ne00 said.

I'll eat here anytime anyone invites me but would skip it otherwise.

Dim Sum

New management. Better items. Still expensive, not one item was marked small. Bill for 5 came out to be $14 per person after tip.

Dim Sum

We ate all standard items. Not one item was considered a small plate. Every item like shu mia and chicken feet was marked medium or large item. Average $3 to $4 more per person than Golden Wok, China Stix or Saigon SH.
