For the last 3 years Ive heard about Aloha but never went for some strange reason. It was Mikes idea to come here and it had been awhile since Ive had Hawaiian food, I cant miss this opportunity. We arrived around 12:20ish and it was empty inside...with tons of tables vacant, I was getting worried. Where was everybody??

I ordered the Kaluha plate, rice, pig, and cabbage. Portions fit for a sumo wrestlers and yes...I overate and still full from my meal, 6 hours later. Overall the meal was respectable, a little salty but kaluha pig melted in my mouth. I could just feel my arteries clogging up again. The plate ran me about $10 which is normally higher than my lunch budget.

I would rate the food inbetween 7.5 and an 8. Final score comes to an 8 for 3 reasons, nice relaxing atmosphere, service was friendly, and kaluha pig is hard to come by. I have no problems making a return visit.

Thanks to Bryce for updating us on Aloha Family Restaurant. It looks like they are temporarily closed and probably relocating. They still offer catering, you can reach them at 408-263-6189 or visit the web site.

I'll be the first to admit that the Hawaiian cuisine is not very friendly to Vegetarians. In fact the last time I was here a couple years back, they had exactly 0 vegetarian selections in their menu. They also had a Hawaiian buffet. They also were packed.

This time a lot has changed at Aloha Restaurant. The location and building are the same, but they have a real menu now with a nice selection of items, and at least 3 items that were veggie-friendly. AWESOME. The buffet is gone, which for the purists might mean a deduction in points (yet for me the buffet was useless, so I'm all for its removal). They were VERY empty too. I guess with lunch hours of 11:30-1:30, they can't expect much lunch traffic. We get there at 12:15ish and there were only 2 other occupied tables. Halfway through our meal, we were the ONLY people in the place. A JaTbar first!

I ordered the Vegetarian burger. Yeah, yeah, not very hawaiian, but it arrived fairly quickly since the cook wasn't doing anything else. It was a basic veggie patty (as opposed to a Boca-type patty). The burger was of good size, with pickles, tomato, lettuce, etc. And the fries on the side. All in all, it was a decent burger. Nothing terribly fancy or new, but the vegetarian who goes here with Kahlua-hungry coworkers can expect to get a good lunch that will fill them up.

My friend and I arrived at 1:40pm on a Friday but the door was still open and they welcomed us in to eat lunch.

The slow roasted pig was very moist and flavorful but a bit salty. It went well with the warm tender, sticky white rice. The Chicken Teriyaki was tender and juicy, a nice teriyaki glaze on top.

The POG (Passion-Orange-Guava) juice was light, refreshing, and delicious but for $2.00 a glass it is not worth it. The cup was already half filled with coarsely crushed ice, thus drinking the entire 8-ounce of juice was easy. The juice tastes more like juice from a can rather than freshly made. Actually I recently purchased a 64-ounce container of Welchs pineapple, guava juice and that tastes very similar to the POG yet costs the same.

The macaroni salad was tasty but not as creamy as J&Js. A side order of macaroni salad was 2.75 more and came out to be a little more than a scoop.

I ordered the Kona Plate, which should have included an order or Lomi Lomi Salmon but his was not served on the plate. The Haupia arrives in a rectangular shaped like a tofu but much firmer than the texture of a tofu. It tastes light and a bit bland but plenty of coconut milk flavor with a hint of sweetness. Veggies are not much as its just a small serving or chopped tomatoes and onions in a Styrofoam cup, more like salsa than actual side of veggies.

Water refill service was poor even though the wait-person stopped at our table 3 times, once to drop off the bill, once to bring us take out boxes, and once to clear out the plates. Not once was I asked or offered a water refill until I asked for one. The cups are small and filled with ice so its quiet easy to finish a drink quickly. There are no free refills except for water.

Extra:

Arrive anytime for lunch, as this place does not fill up during lunch. There are plenty of other eateries around this neighborhood. Many would find the lunch pricing a bit on the high side, as theres not a lunch special menu.

The restaurant is filled with Hawaiian amenities such as posters and statutes and feels like youre on the islands (although Ive never been to Hawaii).

They allow organizations or companies to host parties there, as theres a Karaoke station with a large projection screen. Theres a $5.00 clean up charge for excessive mess.
