China First was a wishlist request. My family hit it up the day before thanksgiving so of course we expected it to be rather empty in there. We find the place and its in the middle of an asian strip mall. For me, sometimes this can be a little bit of a letdown as it could be perhaps too hardcore for me. The place was not empty at all - in fact it was half full and filling up.

We get a table near the back and spread out a bit with the kids. We are given menus and some time to look them over. The menu is impressive but kind of by the numbers. Being a Szechuan speciality, I had to go with the Szechuan prawns. My wife went with the Hunan beef. We got shrimp fried rice and shrimp chow mein. Chow mein can usually be a letdown so we got it as a taste-test. And my son got the beef eggrolls. A lot of food - but its for Jatbar!

The eggrolls arrive first and my son doesn't like them. I think because he is used to eating veggie egg rolls so the flavors are a bit unfamiliar with him.

The chow mein is brought out next. We all dig in as we are hungry. The chow mein is actually REALLY good. Both of my sons eat it up quickly. Even my wife, who doesn't like chow mein, was enjoying it. The rice arrived next and it was fluffy (the lady said it was japanese style rice) and it had a LOT of egg in it. A good sign for me. It was fluffy for fried rice and it tasted VERY good. They proclaim on the menu that they use no MSG so I added a little soy sauce to salt it up a bit.

The hunan beef was proclaimed by my wife to be among the best she has had. The Szechuan Prawns that I got were really good too. Not as spicy as I hoped but still very flavorful and enjoyable. We feasted like crazy. There were some leftovers and the lady was shocked, asking us if we didn't like the food. Not at all - it was great stuff just that we were stuffed.

I think we have found a new local chinese food place now. I noticed they do delivery and pickup. Woohoo. Clean place, non-msg chinese food with friendly service. I'll be back.

*** Update 5.20.06 ***
We have been informed by one of our users JL that China First is no longer around. It has since been replaced by a Pho house.

Shanghainese specialties

This place did the Chinese restaurant menu staples reliably, but where they really shined was with their Shanghainese specialty dishes. Their xiao long bao and Shanghai-style fat chow mein were delicious! They will be missed...
