Not only is their food is excellent, the people that work there are one of the nicest. Always greeting you with a smile and saying goodbye when you leave...Half Penny knows how to treat their customers and thats why Im loyal to them. My favorite dish to order is the broiled halibut with the side of rice. I know its not battered fish but its so good. Unfortunately, the last 3 times I've been, they've been sold out. I hope they didn't get rid of it...oh well, I still have dozens of other things to choose from the menu. Today I ordered the 2 scallops, 2 shrimps, and 1 fish combo. Their batter is very crunch and not soggie like the other wannabe fish n chip places around the bay area. I've looked all over the Bay Area for quality fish n chips and Half Penny is definitely in my top 3. 3 word review - This Place Rocks If you love fish n chips, you'll love Half Penny. *Update 12.26.05 * Half Penny had to close many months ago due to a fire. I know they had another location in Milpitas but not sure if its runned by the same owner. As far as I know, the owner of the Dixon landing location opened up a burger stand called Whiz Burger 802 North 13th Street San Jose, CA 95112 408.292.8205

But there is also a lot of Scottish imagery on the walls as well as classic muscle cars so the place is an eclectic mix of cultures. Anyway, onto the most important part, the food.... Fish n Chips is not my favorite type of food so that is why my rating falls a little compared to Jasons, but when I am in the mood for Fish n Chips, I can't go wrong with Half Penny. I always order the single order of Fish n Chips which includes some fries and 2 fish strips. And they are ALWAYS steaming hot. So if you bring kids here, its wise to cut up the fish and fries to let them cool down first. Half Penny provides each table with ketchup, tartar sauce, salt/pepper and vinegar. So you will have no problem setting up your Fish & Chips how you want em. I feel confident that this place can dominate any other Fish n Chips place in the bay area.

Service was excellent, this is a family owned place and the people there are just super nice. Always try their best to make you feel at home, thats something you dont see everywhere. I had the broiled halibut served with rice the first time I was there, and OMG! its just perfect. The fish was good portion and broiled to perfection, salad was good too. Since Halibut is not available, my next choice would be the three Prawns, two Fish Chips. The batter is crunch and prawn and fish are of good size. You do need to watch out for the temperature though, its HOT!! As far as the price goes, I think its very reasonable for the food you are getting. I have no problem going there once a week.
