Happy Birthday to Dominic. Huong Lan Sandwiches comes in as his birthday wish which kinda caught us off guard. We would have figured his appetite would have commanded an all you can eat Indian buffet. With 4 guys in our party, we drove right over to Huong Lan Sandwiches in Milpitas.

Dominic mentioned Grilled Pork was the one to try so I ordered the grilled pork and meatball. Yes, that's right, you heard me, 2 sandwiches. C'mon banh mi are small and it's mostly bread anyways not that I'm trying to justify my eating disorder.

The bread was like a mini nerf ball toasted and sliced off to the side. Crispy on the outside and with every bite, pieces of bread fly all over the place. You can buy the bread separately and the address of the baker appears to be from San Jose.

The mayo mix was sweet along an assortment of pickled carrots and daikons. Cilantro and the slices of green jalapenos. Remember, not all jalapenos are created equally. Some are mild while others will remind you on the way out. Today's peppers were hot enough to give lingering heat.

grilled pork (image 11) - semi-sweet with chunks of fatty goodness, it almost look like bacon with grill marks on it. The meat is excellent and if they offer a com dia dish with this meat, be sure to try it out. 8.5 rated.

meatball - this one is the odd one for me. You have to eat it warm. It's night and day difference if you wait 2 hours to eat it. It does not travel well. The condiment mixture was ketchup and something else. I never put ketchup on my sandwiches and this is one of the rare times where it just works. The meatball mixture is pork and beef? Don't look at the meat, it's kinda pink, just eat it. It tastes much better than it looks. 7.5 rated.

Be sure to browse the package food area as there's plenty of interesting stuff to take back to the office but please...whatever you do, do not buy those terrible lumpia candy things (just a note, these aren't made by Huong Lan).

It's a jar of mini lumpias that were the sized of large jellybeans. I've never had pre-packed lumpia that look like candy so I brought it back to work. They are soooo gross. It tasted like cardboard with shrimp paste inbetween. My vietnamese coworker pop them down like they were candy. A filipino coworker had them and they didn't seem to bother him. Different tastes I guess but I'll warn you guys to pass on them. Trust me, lumpia shouldn't look like Mike and Ike candy.

Average rating for Huong Lan Sandwiches comes in at 8 and prices were inline with other banh mi places in the area. Meat portions were adequate and if I'm in the area, it's an easy return visit.

Today was Dominic's birthday, so we headed out (at his choice today) to Huong Lan Sandwiches for a new review. It was a bit of a drive for us today, but we arrived and found a truly interesting place. It was surprisingly crowded and had a decent selection. As with most vietnamese sandwich shops, service was brisk and prices were in the basement.

Today I decided to go with the #10 and #12 today (fried fish and the veggie sandwiches). Both were served on their fresh baguettes and were about $2 each. The sandwiches arrived and we sat at one of the plentiful tables there.

These things are large (girth) and 1 of them probably could have held me off for awhile, but I had to try both - so figured I might as well eat them both. The veggie one was first. It had all the standard ingredients and was SPICY. They tossed in huge hunks of jalapenos in their sandwiches and these things were really good. My one complaint was the bread was tougher than I like... don't get me wrong, it was a fresh tasting baguette - it was just prepared on the crispier side.

More of the same with the fish sandwich. The fish is the mcnugget style of fish I have seen at restaurants (not sure the official name of it) - but it was processed like spam or something and then sliced thinly. The result is a salty fishy flavor that was not overpowering, especially when thrown in a jalapeno filled sandwich.

I am glad to have visited Huong Lan. Its on the way home from work for me, so a quick stopover it entirely possible, look for updated reviews when this happens. But I can't complain about the prices, quick service, or more importantly the great food here.

Made a return trip as we stopped by for some Pho next-door first then came here to grab a sandwich and pick up some desserts. I ordered a Grilled Pork sandwich for $2.25, some baseball sized sesame balls with red bean filling, and a couple red bean drinks found in the fridge. The dessert was fairly prices but the dough to bean paste ratio was uneven and the dessert did not taste fresh. I would skip this in the future and pay a bit more for another sandwich. The red bean drink was pricey at $2 but excellent with red beans, coconut milk, and some jelly items.

The grilled pork sandwich is the standard Vietnamese pork sandwiches found everywhere else but the bread tasted fresh, the pork tasty along with the special pate with sliced pickled carrots and turnips. This is the definite winner. Wouldn’t mind coming back to try some pre made wrapped items as they seem to have more than most.

I compare all grilled pork sandwiches to this establishment's. I haven't found one that beats it yet.
