I've driven by here for a few years and finally got around to visiting. The place always looked cool, like some kind of fastfood taqueria in full las vegas glory. So with much anticipation tonight was the night (as honestly I was sick and tired of waiting for the one on Fremont Blvd in Fremont to open - enough with the Coming Soon already!)

We get inside the clean place and look at the large menu. I wish they had menus as I would have got one for scanning but sadly they were out. The menu has burgers and all mexican fare. Plenty of meats, plenty of seafood, carne asada fries, and super nachos - yes thats right. This place may be a good destination for you San Diego folks.

I saw the seafood and got excited so ordered a shrimp jumbo burrito. My wife went with carne asada fries, and my son went with the cheeseburger.

The cheeseburger looked decent enough. The fries were the spicy kind. Not too spicy though as my 18 month old was eating them with vigor.

My wife enjoyed her carne asada fries, but regrets not going with the super nachos as that was her normal thing to get in San Diego. She just didn't see it on the menu as quickly as the carne asada fries.

I thought the shrimp burrito was a bigtime letdown. Inside I was hoping for nice thick juicy shrimp like Taqueria Las Cunados in McCarthy Ranch. I was letdown. The shrimp they put in the burrito were breaded popcorn shrimps. They belonged in Red Lobster not in my burrito. Safe to say I will not order this again. The beans were the other letdown of my burrito. The pinto beans were not mushy at all, just thick boring beans. The tortilla was not the best, but was average. Nothing special here. The rest of the ingredients were good and filled me up for sure.

I will give them another try and go with the old reliable veggie burrito next time and post an update.

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 11/28/2005 - 8.5 Rating: My wife wanted to go the following night! So she picked us up dinner from TLV. She got her Carna Asada Super Nachos and I got the Veggie Burrito. I must say it was MUCH better this time around. The Veggie burrito was solid, save for the lackluster beans, with everything complimenting each other well. I think the cheese they serve is overly salty though, but I can live with that. Otherwise it was good stuff.

The Super Nachos got rave reviews from the San Diego native wife as well. Much better than the Fries from yesterday.

Taqueria Las Vegas, if you are reading this, hurry up and open up the Fremont location!

Taqueria Las Vegas has cultivated a loyal following in the couple of years it has been open. Once the home to Joey's Drive Inn from back in the day. A venerable mom & pop stand that served up decent burgers, fries, and shakes that mostly attracted blue collar types and a few high school students who wanted their burger fix from the fast food chains. That was then and this is now and looking at the building, it still has the burger stand kitsch to it. Walk inside and look at the menu and noticed the burgers and fries are still there. Also noticed the carne asada fries. I could imagine such a thing being made, but to actually have offered in a restaraunt was a little mind blowing. Have to try it next time.

Inside is a little dingy, but respectable. Not too thrilled that the salsa and chip bar is just too close the garbage. Could do a little better job at maintaing the bar as salsa, radishes, jalapenos, and limes were getting mixed up. Realistically though, the place is popular, chips and salsa are free, so a minor mess up is to be expected. Chips are good. Warm, crispy, and lightly salted. Salsa is a bit tangy and sweet.

So I order a carne asada taco, chile verde taco, and a bean & cheese burrito. Cost is around 7 bucks. At home I pop the styrofoam clamshell and start on the tacos. Now these are about on par with the taco truck tacos, but not at taco truck prices. The carne asada was ok. Done in the traditional style of meat on tortilla with salsa and onions. Chile verde is a very messy taco. Especially if you let it sit for a little bit. Should of ate this first. Messy but extremely good. The cubes of stewed beef were obviously slow cooked and almost melts in the mouth. The green chile was a little sweet and nudged with subtle heat. Next up is the foil with my bean & cheese. Its still plenty warm when I dig in and its good and comforting. Chilly nights are meant for burritos like this. Pretty standard. Refried beans and cheese wrapped in a tortilla. Standard, but good. Other things I've had on previous visits are the Jumbo Burritos with your choice meat along with lettuce, guacacmole, and sour cream. The dinner plates are good too.

Chilly nights, warm nights, or any night is a good time to grab a little dinner at Taqueria Las Vegas.

Ate here on thursday and as I watch one of the cook make our food and others,I noticed him handling raw meat, and put it back in the fridge below him, then I see him grab a handful of cheese w/the same hand and put it on my food. He didn't wash up.
