Taqueria Los Cunados was somewhat of a surprise for me. It was suppose to be an appetizer while we waited to get a table next door at Thai Paradise. We had 10 minutes to kill, 1 taco wont hurt.

Restaurant is very clean inside, plenty of room. Free chips and salsa, chips were ok, salsa was ok...above average tasting.

Carnitas taco has a lot of meat, wasnt crunchy but was good enough. Los Cunados puts a lot of salsa on top of their tacos, probably too much. For tacos, I prefer celantro, onions, and hot sauce.

If I was in the area and needed mexican food, Taqueria Los Cunados would satisfy my hunger.

We were waiting in McCarthy ranch for a table at Thai Paradise, and did a Jatbar first. Reviewed 1 restaurant WHILE WAITING FOR ANOTHER. Awesome!!

We rush in there, I order a single shrimp taco and grab a basket of complimentary chips and salsa. I sit down and munch on the chips. The chips here are REALLY good. I would recommend them. The salsa I sampled was the hot salsa and it was not bad. Not terribly spicy, but OK. Maybe Nuclear on the University Chicken scale.

The taco arrived quickly and I looked at it. Usually I'm not a big taco fan (but I didn't want to order a burrito and spoil my appetite completely). The tortilla was fresh and tasty. The shrimp were nice sized (not the little ones that you get in a shrimp coctail or something). It also came with a bunch of fresh grilled mushroom, onions, and green peppers. WOW, this was a VERY tasty treat. I almost didn't want to leave. But JatBar work is NEVER done....

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 1/15/2006 - 9 Rating: Gawd, I was looking at my review of this place and let me be frank. I was embarrassed. It was such a hastily done review and just doesn't do this place justice. Since posting this review, I have returned to this place no less than 6 times, probably closer to 10 times. Sometimes I get the veggie burrito, which is just good, but oftentimes I go with the Super Grilled Shrimp burrito. Man, oh man. This is the burrito to get here. This is my favorite shrimp burrito in the bay area. I have ordered it at many places but this is the best one where i have walked away more than satisfied with my meal. Its a friggin monster, and at nearly $9, it ain't a cheap lunch, but its pure heaven.

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 3/8/2006 - 9.5 Rating: What can I say?

Today I had the day off and was going to review a new place in Fremont, but the _Call of Cunados_ (tm) was too strong to resist. I'm not terribly close to this place, but its not that far a drive so I headed down to Milpitas to munch on the Super Shrimp burrito. Hands down this is my favorite burrito in the east bay.

If I was to judge Cunados by their veggie burrito the score would surely fall. I can get a better veggie burrito at the closer Los Cabos. But the super shrimp burrito here is unmatched, ANYWHERE in the bay area. In my opinion. The shrimps are monstrous, the mixture inside is truly blessed. They don't just have a super burrito with shrimp in it, they put some extra sauce in there and grilled veggies that compliment it perfectly.

Todays burrito was everything I was expecting. And still I was blown away. Going to Taqueria Los Cunados, for me, is like going to la Bamba. I know its gonna be an awesome burrito, but after eating it I always tell myself what a fool I am for not visiting this place more often.

And TLC is even better because they keep their place pretty clean, even the bathroom. The chips are decent, salsas could use some work. My 20 month old son joined me today and had a cheese quesodilla. He worked it pretty well, but I helped him with a few bites. The cheese they use here is the real authentic stuff. Very salty.

If I was to suggest an improvement for Los Cunados, I would say they should throw their tortillas on the grill a bit. Los Cunados, if you are reading this, please goto La Bamba and try their shells just to see what I'm talking about. If they had that, the super shrimp burrito would be a 10. Also to note, the SS burrito is over $9, so it ain't exactly a bargain.

I was happy to see the signs on the wall: Best of Milpitas for 2005. Much deserved.

Taqueria Los Cunados

Spoke with my friend on IM and he told me he found this awesome taco place near his house that served excellent shrimp tacos. Told me it was right next to On The Borders and I looked it up on Jatbar.com and found out it was Taqueria Los Cunados.

We hit up this place for lunch as he was buying. Hey, I am all up for a free lunch! I ordered a shrimp taco (2.35), a regular fish burrito (6.35), and a small soda. My friend ordered two shrimp tacos and two chicken tacos.

When we arrived around 1:30 pm, we were the only patrons there. We helped ourselves to some salsa and free chips. There salsa bar is clean and neatly labeled. The chips under the heat lamp were lightly salted, warm and crispy. Usually the free chips and salsa area is dirty or the chips are stale, so props to Los Cunados for keeping it real here. Self-serve all you can eat chips, another plus for coming here. I found the mild salsa still a little on the spicy side and the fresh salsa had one too many hot peppers within it.

Our food arrived 10 minutes later. The shrimp taco looked great, not like any other taco I have had. Cilantro and, what looked like, parsley were finely chopped, there were some grilled sliced bell peppers and four nicely sized grilled shrimps with salsa on top. The tortilla was moist, which has not been the case recently on my taco outings.

What was disappointing was the regular fish burrito. The burrito contained grilled fish pieces, fresh salsa, Mexican rice, and pinto beans. The salsa had too much spicy pepper within it. The burrito was just not eventful for me. Rice was just average tasting. Tortilla wrap was not moist but tasted fresh. Overall, the burrito tasted healthy and fresh but did not wow me. I would not pay 6.35 for a burrito on my own.

Will probably come back to try other burritos but the shrimp taco here is definitely the winner! At 2.35, it is a bit expensive (1.99 for non seafood tacos) but I love the way they make it here.

Pluses: Free drinks refills, accepts Visa and MC, clean and labeled salsa bar, all you can fresh tasting chips, friendly service, awesome shrimp tacos.

Minuses: Pricey.

I finally decided to try Los Cunados based on the good rating on jatbar. Parking was a pain but the place was not crowded. The interior was clean and bright, plus there were tables outside. After waiting in a short line, I ordered my usual regular chicken burrito to go, plus gaucamole. Total cost was $5.50 for the burrito plus another buck for the guac. Pretty standard. While I waited, I made myself a bag of chips at the salsa bar. Mmmm. Warm and homemade. Nice! I also packaged up some green salsa. I received my burrito quickly and jumped in the car. Three cars fought it out for my spot when I left (I didn’t stick around to see who won). Back at work I dug in. Burrito was OK and quite messy. It was a minor miracle I didn't spill all over myself. The chicken wasn't very flavorful and the whole thing was a little underwhelming. The chips were excellent, though. The salsa was way too sweet for me. It was like they dumped in a pound of sugar. Yeck. All in all this visit ranked a 7.5.

On my next visit I decided to try the shrimp burrito based on Terrie's review. I'm not into sour cream, so I ordered the regular version instead of the super burrito. With tax the total was around $8.60. I helped myself to chips and salsa while I waited. Chips didn't seem that fresh, but the pico de gallo salsa was delicious and super fresh. Then the burrito arrived. It was slightly undersized and came in a steamed tortilla. I can't say I didn't like it – it was pretty good, and I was hungry. But I must say I was a little disappointed by a few things. 1) the fajita style veggies were cut very large and unevenly, and these made the burrito hard to eat. I was pulling out large chunks of veggie with every other bite which tended to drip and make a mess. I must've used up 6 napkins just keeping everything tidy. 2) the size and amount of shrimp were a little disappointing. I counted about 10 smallish shrimp in the entire burrito. Kinda skimpy for what I paid. Overall, the flavor was good, but I can't say I would seek this meal out again. Rating 7.5

On my third trip here I decided to check out the taco plate with beans and rice. I asked for two tacos, one carnitas and carne asada. Total price was $7.67 which is on the higher side but not outrageous. The place was kinda dead, so I actually received my food before I sat down, probably a first for me at a taqueria. (The guys at the grill must have overheard my order). Anyway, the tacos were both excellent. The carne asada had nice flavor and texture. The carnitas had big meaty chucks with a slight crackle to them, and very little fatty pieces. One of the best tacos I've had in a while. The only downside of my plate was the beans and rice. The pinto beans they gave me were a little bland, and the rice was a little on the dry side. I've had much better. If it hadn't been for the beans and rice I would have given this plate a solid 8.5, maybe 9 if the beans were excellent. As it was, it gets an 8. Averaging my three experiences results in a 7.5 rating for Los Cunados.

I went here with some friends since one of my friends was getting his oil changed at the Wal-Mart near here. This seemed like a better choice than going to On The Border (then again, McDonald's seems like a better choice than going there). At the front counter there was a screen that showed pictures of the various items you can order and that was pretty neat. The thing that made me take a step back a bit were the prices. For a good lunch the prices are alright, but for a taqueria they're a little expensive (these were almost like Baja Fresh prices except they didn't charge more for steak).

After seeing Terry's review of their Super Shrimp Burrito, I definitely had to try it. The Super Shrimp was the most expensive of the burrito section (the only other dishes that were more expensive were the seafood plate items). So I ordered both a Super Shrimp Burrito for $9 I believe and a Pollo Asado Torta for ~ $6.

After ordering I noticed the chip and salsa bar next to the counter. They had many different kinds of salsas and it was self-service for the chips. The chips weren't spectacular, but it was a nice gesture for them to put them out. I also did what I believe to be one of the more stupider things in my life by bringing back some fried jalapenos + onions with some (hot) salsa and lime doused on. I decided to have this as an appetizer since I figured each chip was probably 10 cals, and this would be far lower in cals and much more filling. I ate the terrible concoction I had made and it tasted okay, but a few seconds later the back of my throat was on fire along with my stomach. It's funny that I disregarded the salsa that was labeled 'hot', because the next day I went up to Davis with my friend and went to a place called 'El Mariachi's' and I once again disregarded the 'hot' warning for the Habanero salsa.

The food came out fairly quickly and I then bit into my Super Shrimp Burrito. The flavors that came out weren't what I expected at all. It was very wet on the inside, there were bell peppers, and it was somewhat citrusy. I then noticed that on the menu it said the Super Shrimp Burrito was served fajitas style (think Baja Fresh Burrito Ultimo style) which I guess explained this. It's not that it was bad it was just really unexpected. In-fact it was a very good burrito, had lots of good sized shrimp, and it was a good sized burrito (not too small, but not El Mariachi's Super Combo big). The $6 Torta was good too (and pretty damn big), and the only gripe I had about that was the bread because it was the soft kind. I still like the La Victoria's torta the most and for $3.50 because the bread is nice and crunchy (maybe they fry it). Heck I'd take this torta over the $4.50 torta I got at El Mariachi's in Davis.

Anyways even though this place is a bit pricey I don't think it should deter people from having a good shrimp burrito. If I was feeling like having Mexican and wanted to be a bit lenient with my wallet I'd definitely come back here and try what else they have. I'm pretty sure I'd also douse jalapenos in hot sauce again and ask myself why I'm such an idiot again as well.
