I decided to head to Vung Tao II because its hard to hit a vietnamese place for lunch because Jason usually is not too fond of it. So dragged my family along. We arrived and its quite fancy inside yet you are instantly made to feel at home.

The menu was large and mostly unfamiliar to me. They do not offer Pho here, so that made things a bit more difficult for me. I went with a noodle dish that included prawns. It was something I have never experienced before, and I'm not too sure thats its my cup of tea. It was definitely fresh tasting and had interesting new flavors for me. But mostly it was just bland plain noodles. The prawns were grilled and had a tinge of sweetness to them. They were moist on the inside but cooked well. I really enjoyed them. The noodles weren't finished as it was just too much starch for me. I would return with someone more familiar with the cuisine that would perhaps assist me in choosing items that would perhaps appeal more to me. Unfortunately their veggie selection is a bit slim.

Terry - I'll take you back to Vung Tau II and order for you :)

It's actually very well known and respected in the Vietnamese community as one of the best restaurants in the bay area. They are more well known for their hu tieu or bun (rice noodle bowls) during lunch and their canh chua (sour fish soup) for dinner. Some of the dinner items are definitely an acquired taste as most of them are seasoned with fish sauce.

However, if you stick to more mainstream items, I would recommend their com bo luc lac (tomato fried rice with cubes of steak) - it's very good! (likely because it's fried in butter :)

In any case, I would highly recommend Vung Tau II (or Vung Tau I in downtown, which was recently remodeled, but the prices are a bit higher) and take a Vietnamese friend with you to help you order!

Good prices for good food - clean, but not immaculate - decent service, but don't expect too much there...

Don't forget their egg rolls as an appetizer! You get 6 per order - so remember not to fill up before your meal!
