A couple of weeks back we went to Amate in Mountain View. I ate the legendary mole poblano but had mixed reactions on what my rating was going to be. I thought the mole had too much of a chocolate taste and an overwhelming chile flavor. It wasn't bad but I don't think I could order it again. I had faith in Amate's food and wanted to make a return visit to try more of the exciting menu items.

green tomatillo enchiladas (image 13) - 3 corn tortillas filled with chicken breast and smothered with a tarty green tomatillo sauce, sour cream, and cotija cheese. Chicken breast was on the healthier side. Rice was fluffy and beans were good without the lardy aftertaste. There was an overflow of salsa verde and mixed nicely with rice/beans. For $9, I'd repeat order.

tostada de ceviche (image 12) - White fish, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, avocado, lettuce topped on a crunchy corn shell. Heavy on the lime and vinegar. Fish was incredibly fresh. Ordered as an appetizer but with 2 of these on the table, it's enough for a meal. I saw this dish on my last visit and remembered how good it looked. It taste better than it looks. One of the best Ceviche I've had at a mexican restaurant. At $3.50, I think it's a steal considering how refreshing it was.

My first visit to Amate (legendary mole poblano) rates in the vicinity of 7.5 and last visit was a solid 8.5. Combine both scores and you average an 8. I'm already looking forward to coming back as the regular burritos have sparked more interest.

Amate was a suggestion from Dominic and it was a good find. Its located like a block down from Rogers Deli. The place is newly opened, so everything looks fresh inside. And it feels a bit upscale compared to most taquerias. The menus look fresh and a bit different. The place describes itself as a new style of Mexican cooking, with classic ingredients, and with all the Mexican places I have visited, I definitely could tell that this place was different. It had a Fresh-Mex feel, yet with the classic (bad for you) ingredients, you aren't stuck in a dismal tasteless FreshMex hell.

Instead of my normal veggie burrito (since I saw Dominic order it, I thought I would switch things up), I went with the Shrimp burrito. It was more of a fajitas style burrito with fresh veggies inside with the shrimp. The shrimp themselves were of good size but not overly large and not too many. The tortilla was fried and supersoaked with grease - quite tasty.

Overall the burrito was decent. Probably a 7.5 in my book. If it was larger, I would probably be thinking of an 8. I loaded up on some of the forgettable chips, tho the salsa wasn't terribly spicy, it was good. I still left the place a little lacking. I think next time I will go for the veggie burrito (but with the classic greasy tortilla) and an appetizer or dessert to maximize the lunch. I look forward to returning and trying more of the menu.

RETURN VISIT for Terry! 2/5/2007 - 8 Rating: Made a return visit today with Jason and this time I went with the Chile Relleno burrito. It was unique enough and tasty enough to make it a recommended item from me. I would order this again for sure. Had a bit of spice to it, but had plentiful flavor and filled me up quite nicely.

Now named "Southwest Grille"?

Looks like the same place and their Website link redirects to southwestgrille.com. It's closed Saturdays between lunch and dinner, so we missed it.
