Clarkes has been grilling burgers since 1945, almost 60 years in business. Today we to the Mountain View location near Castro street. Its a small burger shack with adequate outdoor seating.

I ordered the Clarks special which is burger and fries for $5.47. Add $1 for a slice of cheese and another $1 or so for the drink, so your order should be roughly $9. Kind of steep for a burger combo but this place isnt a fast food chain. They use lean meat and cook the meat instead of nuking it. Also a nice addition is the fixin bar. You can top off your burger with condiments and veggies the way you like it.

Cooking over charcoal adds a lot of flavor to the burger...too much in my opinion. I prefer the natural and burnt flavor when cooking ground beef. The burger tasted good and it wasnt greasy but had a weird color to it. You'll have to see it for yourself..its kind of a tan brown color? Maybe its the mesquite charcoal?

If you're tired of eating fried burgers, stop by Clarks and chow down on some charcoal broiled burgers.

OK, I can't really give a fair review of Clarke's since I always get the Veggie burger there. As far as Veggie burgers goes, its about a little above average, yet the price is a bit high. Its nice in that you can load up on the toppings as much as you want. But you pay for it big time in the high pricetag. For a juicy meat burger perhaps its worth it, but for a nonmeat patty it seems kinda small as the patty is smaller than the meat equivalents.

The shakes are real ice cream and VERY good. I always try to order one of these there if I can afford it. Overall, Clarke's is worth a try. Its up to you whether its worth a return visit after that....

I have to mostly agree with Terry on this one. The veggie burger is a little bland for how much you pay for it, regardless of how many toppings you can pile on, which is a plus. I would add, though, that last time I tried the onion rings and they were very, very good. If you like onion rings. Ill get them and a milkshake next time. But until I try the milkshake I cant give em any more than 7 stars.

I have been to Charles a few times. The food there is about average, at least I can't tell the difference and I felt that some chain burger joints serve better burger, but that's just me. The last time I was there, I ordered the rib special and a shake, supposed to be really good but I was disappointed. The rib is tender but not as good as the ones at Tony Roma's, shake was also good, but I can get similar quality shake at other place for cheaper price, and for $20+ I think it's too much for this kind of food. There are many other choices when it comes to burgerdogs so that's why I don't go back anymore.

SETTING: Large, faded, red-painted, shack-like burger place that looks like it's been here forever. The surprisingly large footprint means there are a lot of spots to sit, both inside and out.

PRICE: Pretty steep for what it is. My burger, small fries, and small drink was $10.61. And to think that In-N-Out burger is only a few blocks away. Sigh.

FOOD: Good burger with strong, smoky flavor. Though it was a bit too smoky (did they put little liquid smoke into the meat?) Not a huge turn-off though. The fixins bar was one of the nicest I've ever seen. It was super clean and well-stocked. The fries were hand-chopped and delicious, though about a third of them were too soggy to eat. (Did I mention that In-N-Out is nearby, that they also have hand-made fries, and that you can order them extra crispy? - "well done" in In-N-Out parlance)

Kudos for providing a burger with sliced green chiles (my favorite burger topping of all time), but as you can probably tell, I couldn't stop obsessing about going to In-N-Out for half the price ($5.35 to be exact). For the extra $5 more in my pocket, I'll forgo the green chiles.

I hate getting nickel and dimed at places, and this is totally one of those places- the food is great, and the fact that you can add your own condiments is fabulous, but getting the burger you want can be downright expensive.
