Hong Kong Bakery was an impulse visit. I wasnt even hungry for dessert but we made our way in. I ordered the strawberry slice (See picture #5). I choose this one because my mom was the master at making this. I would be able to benchmark it against homecooking. Well, not exactly like moms but just a notch below. Cake was soft and moist but the strawberry filling was weak...it was some sort of red sweet gel. I think it tasted like strawberry? Well one good thing about this place, their dessert was overly sweet to the point where my teeth were aching.

We went in here to, quite simply, but another review under our belts. Well what a wonderful place to do so. I ordered the sweet roll with the cream filling (Image #5!) and for only $2, it was a good deal. It didn't blow me away like one from Vienna Bakery, but it was decent, if a little bland. Perhaps the chocolate-covered one they had behind the glass would have better suited me, but this was more than I could finish as it is.

I think this would be a great bakery to take little kids to as there are tons of multi-colored assortments of cookies and other baked goods behind the glass, some in the shape of airplanes, etc. Stuff that would really draw a kids attention for a long time as they tried to decide what to beg their mom or dad for.

They carry Birthday Cakes, Hong Style Pastry, Baked Pork Bun, Steamed Pork Bun, Egg Custard, etc. Check them out. They have another location on 69 W 37th Avenue in San Mateo as well.

Hong Kong Bakery was a stop after reviewing a sushi restaurant across the street. I got a chocolate custard pastry. The thing was surprisingly good, it was not too sweet which I liked. Also it was quite cheap for most of the items in the pace. I will come back again and try more stuff. Well deserving 8 stars.

Traditional HongKong style old school bakery shop on Castro street. I especially enjoyed the egg tar here, very original. My kids love the Hello Kitty cookies too. It's a great place to stop by after meal if you have a sweet tooth. I think the desert would go well with some nice coffee too.

Hong Kong Bakery

As a kid I would come here often since church was on the other side of El Camino. My favorite item at the time was the Egg Custard (dan ta). Well years later the formula for the egg custard is still the same.

I was craving for some desert after just finishing my dinner right around the corner. There was only one egg custard left so I made sure to order it right away as several other customers were browsing the selections as well.

I ended up going with sweet roll with cream filling, egg custard, chicken pie, and a pre packaged item with red bean. The pre packaged items are not store made.

Egg Custard: Plenty of egg custard, light pastry shell that’s not dry and the pastry do not stick to the roof of your mouth. Sweeter than most but goes down easy as it’s a very light treat. (9/10)

Sweet roll with cream filling: The sweet roll was not soft by the time I ordered it. The pastry shell was already hard and it was thick. The shell was too over whelming to eat. The cream tasted as if it had some lemon zest added to the flavor. This was not smooth cream as it tasted more like cake icing. (7/10)

Chicken Pie: This is best eaten when hot so I popped it into the microwave to heat it up. This helped soften the pastry shell around it. Once again there was too much pastry. The chicken pie looks a bit like a space craft. The filling is stuffed within the top bubble of the pastry and there’s a pastry ring around it. There is too much pastry around the ring as the pastry is dry if eating it alone. (7/10)

Hong Kong bakery also sells dim sum items as well as meat buns and cakes. Its cash only and many of the items seem over priced. I would only return for the egg custard.

As many of the folks on here do, I stop by the Hong Kong bakery after my lunch around Castro street when I want dessert and haven't hit any of the Boba tea shops yet. I almost 90% of the time buy their Chifon cake (the sponge cake) they have there because it's so moist, fluffy and soo MMMmMmMm good to my tastebuds. I think it's quite expensive though.

I've also had their baked BBQ pork bun there and it's pretty average, nothing to write home about.

I haven't had their egg tart yet, but I have eaten their dim sum, har gow and siu mai and both I think are pretty good, except they're pretty darn pricey for not being served at a dim sum restaurant sitting on a nice plate being pushed around by some nice loud ladies.

I've tried their sticky rice in the lotus leave and I felt it lacked flavor although not terrible.

I drop in here for a snack or dessert when in the area, but I've been less than impressed lately. Appearances can be deceptive and that's what I would say about their delicacies. The sponge cake and the white sugar cake is terribly dry and barely edible. Eventhough it's a cheap snack or dessert, resist the urge. It's well below sub-par.

Custard Tart

Usually order these as a dessert after Dim Sum. Their crust is nice and crunchy. Wow surprised they are still surviving without remodeling.
