Back to the stomping grounds of Mountain View. I kinda miss eating at all the restaurants on Castro. Terry and I used to hit up this street at least twice a week. So many different places to try and all within a 5 minute drive from Microsoft.

We picked Hong Kong Bistro at the last minute with no expectations. The restaurant was completely packed with Asian people and had to wait a couple of minutes for a cramped table near the kitchen.

I don't even know if we ordered the right dishes? I figured since the restaurant had Hong Kong in the name, I'd order in the spirit of a Hong Kong style dish, baked pork chops. At $7.50, it's respectable priced dish considering the portion size.

In picture 5, there's rice and an egg under that big pile of 2 pork chops and tomato sauce. Although the pork chops were large on the portion side, I thought they were too fatty. I would assume they are pre-cooked and heated to serve as there's no way you can cook them in under 5 minutes. The worst part of the dish was the tomato sauce which tasted like thick gourmet ketchup. ehhh, I don't think it's suppose to taste this. It's wasn't mind-numbingly terrible but nothing noteworthy either.

Wasn't exactly the lunch experience I wanted. Service is quick with little or no personality from our servers. There's gotta be a reason why Hong Kong Bistro has every table filled. Maybe I need help with the menu? Other than that, it would be 50/50 return visit.

If there's a standout dish, let me know.

Always a joy reviewing a new place on Castro Street in Mountain View. I always have an expectation that places have to be one step above to hang with the hefty competition.

We arrive and the place is packed. Good sign. When we do get our seats, the menu is interesting. They have these icons that match the pictures on the page to specific items on the menu. After some hemming and hawing I felt I had to go with the Baked Seafood over Rice.

The service is quite prompt (which was nice, especially considering how packed the place was). My dish came out lightning quick and it looked promising. Read: it looked very rich and filling.

I dug into it and was instantly kind of unimpressed. The white sauce was probably very rich, but wasn't rich flavored. The cheese was nice, and helped out. Seafood underneath was mostly by the numbers and was good. Rice was your standard white rice. I think the sauce kind of ruined it for me. It didn't have the deep flavor I was hoping for. With the price of the dish over $8, it was a bit of a let down.

Perhaps there are better items on the menu. I wouldn't mind returning to try something else, as I was impressed by the efficiency of the place.
