Las Muchachas like most jatbar restaurants are found by accident, usually on the way back from another review. With adaquate seating and good ventilation inside, you'll be happy to know you wont smell like mexican food when you leave.
I ordered the Carne Asada burrito and happy I did. The tortilla was soft, rice was fluffy, and meat had a hint of lime in it. Too bad the beans werent refried. Free chips and salsa are always a nice touch to any mexican restaurant.
Prices were good as it only cost me $6 for burrito and coke. For the Mountain View area, Las Muchachas makes it in my top 10 burrito list. A solid 8 for a solid tasting restaurant.

We stopped by Las Muchachas Restaurant on a drive-by. Its kind of old looking on the outside and maybe a little offputting since its a little bit off the burrito triangle, but I am here to report that its worth the trip.
I think it may even be a little better than Los Altos Taqueria. The tortillas and cheese are top notch here, the vegetables are fresh, and the burritos have a bit of a kick to them, spicier than most burritos. They don't offer refried beans in their burritos, but otherwise, this is a knockout of a burrito. The super burritos are not terribly large, but are large enough to be filling. I will definitely return here.

Las Muchachas was my choice today. I went way past my lunchtime today (2:30) So I was pretty much starving to say the least. I made my order over the phone regular carne asada burrito. They had it ready for me as soon as I got there. (5 minutes)
The burrito was very good. The meat was full of flavor and the rice rocked. They gave me 3 limes with it which I drenched the burrito in. I finished off the whole thing and sat there for a few minutes trying to digest what I had just accomplished. Forgot to mention that it was only $4. Great deal! 8.5 stars.

Coming from Rengstorf Ave, Las Muchachas is on the left side of Middlefield Way right before the Middlefield Rd traffic light.
Summary:
Cheap selections, except the seafood choices. Great value on tacos. One of the best burritos I have had. Burritos are very moist and the Asada cut up into pieces, making it easy to digest.
Full Review:
Had a little difficulty finding this place in the rain. Should have came from San Antonio Rd had I known which side the restaurant was on. When I finally got here I parked next to some taco truck that had a taco menu selling dollar tacos.
The restaurant had several patrons; families of Mexican decent, which is always a good sign for authenticity. I checked out their menu hoping to order maybe a dinner plate, but the menu did not strike my interest so I opted for the taco and burrito menu. Holy Cow this place is cheap! Tacos are 1.25 each with choice of meat, onions, salsa, and cilantro. Burritos are 3.95 or a dollar more for a super burrito. I decided to go with an Asada super burrito, one pollo taco and one pastor taco. Final bill was a few cents over 8.00. This has to be one of the cheapest dinners I have had in a while. I was asked if I wanted everything on my taco and I said no cilantro but yes to the onions.
I grabbed one of their menus and explored other interesting selections they have. They carry specialty items I have never seen before. An interesting burrito selection popped out from the menu, a Burrito De Chile Relleno, which is a chile relleno put into a burrito with two scrambled eggs. At 5.25 this was an interesting selection for when I make a trip back.
While waiting I noticed they sell ice cream and malts as well. The woman who took my order was also bringing cups of coffee and refilling coffee for customers. This is new to me as typically I dont see Mexican restaurants serving coffee.
I waited no more than 10 minutes and my order was ready to go. After driving home, the tacos were the first items I dug into. I was a bit disappointed to see that they left out the onions. The container contained two small tortilla discs with grilled roasted chicken and some sort of green salsa on one taco and pork with some sort of red salsa on the other taco. There was one large wedge of lemon, which I drenched over the two tacos. The chicken was very moist and the salsa added a nice kick to the flavor. The pork was a bit though to chew but the flavor within the red sauce helped greatly. The tacos were a satisfying snack and for 1.25 I would not mind ordering them again when I go back. I defiantly enjoyed the pollo more and would order it as the meat choice for my burrito in the future.
The burrito within the Jatbar photos seemed a little wimpy to me, but that is because they are regular sized burritos. The super burritos were much larger. One bite later, I was sold on the burrito. The tortilla was soft and rice was fluffy, making the burrito taste very moist but plenty of flavors. My only complaint was the asada was towards one side of the burrito while everything else was on the other half of the burrito with very little asada on that side.
The asada was excellent. A bit well done so it was a little chewy but they cut it to smaller pieces so it was easy to go down. By the time, I got to the rice, man I was blown away by how fluffy the rice was. I was even more surprised with the lettuce they put in the burrito. The lettuce is not raw chopped lettuce rather it has been stir-fried and just complimented the rice. Even though I ordered a super burrito, there were hardly any condiments to get in the way of the taste.
Burrito: 9 Taco Pollo: 9 Taco Pastor: 8
Pluses: Plenty of parking. Sign on the door said American Express welcome, which is odd because most also include logos for MC and Visa and only the Amex logo was displayed at the door. Excellent value and taste.
Minuses: Take out orders does not get free chips and salsa.

I missed the entrance again! I noticed the sign is not lit up at nighttime. The only sign lit up is some church's sign that shares the complex with Las Muchachas.
I was craving for some more tacos and that Chile Relleno burrito. The place was not that crowded tonight. There was only one couple eating at a table. Good thing I knew what I wanted to order since the chile relleno burrito is not on their counter menu but inside their paper menu. Be sure to check out their actual paper menu.
I ordered three tacos at 1.25 each, chicken, steak, and carnitas (which was not on the menu but I had to ask). Then I ordered the burrito (which I had to ask again). Total order was under 10.00. I waited a good 10 minutes for them to make my order.
When I got home the burrito was still hot, which is a good sign as they make it fresh. The tacos are loaded with meat with some onions and cilantro. Depending on the meat they top it off with different versions of the salsa. The tortillas again were not very moist but a lot better than last time. Chicken was good although not as tender as last time, but each of their taco had a lot of meat with every bite. Onions and cilantro added to the flavor but not overly so to over power the taste. Carnitas is more of the stewed version, as there were bits pieces of fat but flavorful and tender. Steak was not very tender but cut up into bits so it was manageable.
Burrito was awesome. Contents included refried beans, Mexican rice, scrambled eggs which was wrapped around the chile relleno. The cheese inside the relleno was still gooey and hot. This was a messy burrito to eat but very enjotyable. Only negative aspect was that I found a stick in my burrito. It is a stick they typically use to keep things together. The stick did not seem dirty, and no injury came of it. The tortilla around the burrito was steamed and very moist as was the rice.
They do accept all major credit cards with no minimum purchase amount.

You can probably tell by my high rating, this is my all time favorite taqueria in the bay area. I love their cheap burritos and tacos. I stopped by during dinner and decided on their Pollo Burrito Mojado with green sauce ( 5.95) and two asada tacos (1.25 each). I waited a total of 5 minutes and my meal was done. It is sad that this place does not have more customers as their burritos taste so much better than the burrito triangle down the street, and so much cheaper as well.
When I got home the burrito had pretty much cooled off as the parts of the Mexican cheese had formed clumps within the green sauce. I was surprised to find a bag of chips and salsa as the past few times I have frequented the restaurant they did not include the free chips and salsa with my to go order.
Once again the burrito was excellent. Love how they fill the burrito with roasted simmered chicken, moist flavorful rice, pinto beans. You can't beat the price of the tacos here. They may be a bit smaller but they pack in a lot of flavor. The size difference tend to be the tortilla anyways. Would you really justify paying a buck more for larger tortilla? This is a monster meal for less than 10.00.
** Update 7/15/2006 **
Missed lunch at work and this being my favorite taqueria close to work, I swung on by for a later lunch. This place was swamped at 2pm. I waited about 10 minutes to place my order as the couple ahead of me kept ordering and couldn't deice what they wanted.
I decided on the Super Quesadilla with pollo and Burrito Chile Colorado. Total order was 11.75.
Super Quesadilla: This was priced over 5.00 and I wanted something cheaper but their cheaper versions did not appeal to me. My other quesadilla choices were, cheese quesadilla or meat quesadilla that only consisted of meat, onions, and salsa. The super quesadilla included choice of meet, jack cheese, lettuce, onions, salsa, and guacamole.
By the time I took it back to the office, a small pool of liquid had formed. This was either the liquid from the salsa or the lettuce. The meal included three large slices of quesadilla with plenty of pollo in each slice. The guacamole was spread on thin and no sour cream was included. (8/10)
Burrito Chile Colorado: This burrito melts in your mouth and is completely effortless to eat. The burrito consisted of plenty tender pieces of beef cubes with mild red sauce, melt in your mouth refried beans, a small portion of fluffy seasoned rice wrapped in a grilled tortilla. ( 9.5/10). This is a must try! |

Las Muchachas used to be the best deal in town, but recently prices have gone up. Now the prices are about average. However, it's still a good place to check out if you haven't been there.
On my first visit here last year I ordered the regular chicken burrito and paid only $4.28 incl tax. This was an amazing deal and the cheapest I had seen! The burrito was close to perfection: fresh chewy tortilla, perfectly cooked, moist chicken, good beans and loaded with fresh cilantro and onions. And it came with chips. Yum. This was as good as 3 Potrillos or La Bamba, but even cheaper (at the time). My meal came to the table about 2 minutes after ordering.
On my next visit the place was overflowing with people watching a big soccer game, so I ordered a taco plate to go with a mix of carnitas and al pastor tacos. Both kinds had super fatty pieces mixed in, which I ejected, but the rest was good. The carnitas were super tasty and had some crispy edges. The al pastor had a bit less flavor than I am used to. This place gets a gold star for service and parking. With the huge crowd I was still able to park in the lot and get my food in about 7 minutes. Not as fast as La Bamba, but not bad for a sit-down place under extremely crowded conditions.
On my third visit I ordered the chicken enchiladas with green sauce, but unfortunately the sauce was tomatillo, not green chile. Oh well. It was pretty damn good, and for $7 it was an immense amount of food. I couldn't finish, but left happy and full.
On my most recent visit, I repeated my very first order here: regular chicken burrito. The total cost this time was $5.36 with tax --A 25% price hike!! No longer the screaming deal it used to be. Too bad. Still, its no more expensive than most other spots, and my burrito was absolutely delicious, with tender, flavorful chicken, cilantro, onions and beans. I think I might like it better than La Bamba's version. I may have to do a comparison someday.
Other recent changes are an updated, more professional-looking wall menu. Also, they added flat panel TVs in the dining room. Unfortunately they set the volume pretty high, so it's hard to have a quiet, relaxing meal if you are eating in. One thing I USED to like about this place was the large, quiet dining room.
One other thing I've noticed recently about Las Muchachas is that at lunchtime on most weekdays the place is nearly dead. Sometimes only one or two tables are occupied. I'm wondering if they just do a lot of takeout business, with some at night? I do hope they can stay in business. This is a nice alternative to the crowded taquerias at burrito triangle nearby, and it definitely holds its own with them IMHO. It's a bit sad that there's such a huge, booming business at the relatively new Chipotle Grill (chain) only 4 blocks away. But I guess it comes down to location, location, location.
Pros: Excellent food, on par with burrito triangle joints; great parking: speedy service; typically no big lines or crowds Cons: Hispanic stations blaring on TVs can be a bit annoying |
