I've must have driven down Rengstorff Ave hundreds of times and never noticed Maldonado's Pizza. It's kinda hidden off El Camino next to a 7-11 and laundry mat. With a small dining counter, it's an ideal spot for an on the go meal or takeout type of place. I was driving my co-worker Drew home when we decided to hit up Maldonado's Pizza. One of our jatbar users, Max L. gave us solid recommendations on the sub sandwiches and bread sticks, particularly the Crazy Bread.

I ordered a meatball sandwich for $5.54. It's your standard meatball sandwich with cut up meatballs, mozzarella cheese, pizza sauce, and french bread. It's place open faced in this gigantic rotating oven at 525 degrees. Sandwiches are made fairly fast and even better that the subs come out piping hot.

bread - tonight's bread was overly done and burnt on the edges but since the bread tasted so good, it didn't bother me. Bread is almost a foot long and portion size is enough to eat the rest for later.

cheese - melted cheese in every bite, high quality cheese.

sauce - mild sauce and much better than what you get at the chain places. I love this sauce.

meatballs - the highlight of the sandwich. the meat was perfectly seasoned with herbs and spices and quite frankly, one of the better meatball sandwiches I've had in awhile. It's a definite repeat order for me.

The secret menu item to get is the Crazy Bread. I think the person who took my order gave me the fresh bread sticks as the crazy bread will have melted mozarella cheese. I'll have to make a return visit for the Crazy Bread but judging from the fresh bread sticks, the dough is pizza bread with parmesan, garlic, olive oil served with a ranch or pizza dipping sauce. It's a small pizza for only $2.31 and considered a steal. The pizza dough is dense and the bread is good enough to serve in a bakery.

Maldonadao's Pizza is kinda off the beaten track and not to be missed. Their sub sandwiches are so good, they literally beat the socks off sandwich shops in the area. The fresh bread sticks are a perfect compliment to any meal and at $2.31, it's worth the extra bucks.

I'll need to make a return visit back to Maldonado's Pizza for their pizzas and cheesy crazy bread. Until then, I can't see any reasons for not trying this place out.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 5/16/2007 - 8.5 Rating: Maldonado's Pizza is a complete winner in my book. I took Jose over here for a tasting menu. We ordered a meatball sandwich, crazy bread, and pepperoni pizza. All of it equally good to each other. If I had to choose the medal ceremony for food olympics.

Gold Medal - Crazy bread

Silver Medal - Meatball Sandwich

Bronze Medal - Pepperoni Pizza

Pepperoni pizza

This is Mexican pizza. The sauce is strange and does not taste anything like tomatoes, and the pepperonis were not even pepperonis, they were some bizarre type of Mexican sausage. This is not truth in advertising. Call it Mexican pizza.

pepperoni and cheese slice

Great pizza, didn't take long for the heat up, but I noticed a lot of people call ahead for slices not just whole pies.

pizza, calzone, crazy bread

Pizza and crazybread are great values, pizza well tasty, calzone overstuffed and soggy.
