My family was in Oakland Chinatown today and walking around looking for a random restaurant to eat in. It was a coin toss between Ying Kee and the restaurant next door. While the next door place was doing more take out business, Ying Kee appeared to be more crowded. We get inside and take one of the last tables.

The menus are shown to us upon sitting down. The items are a unique mix of vietnamese and chinese dishes. It seemed like most folks here were going for the large rice bowls here, but I decided to stick with the specials. My wife went with the spicy fried fish and I went with the tofu and vegetables. We shared an order of shrimp fried rice.

While waiting for my food, I looked around. Lots of families here on this weekend day, and plenty of wait staff attended to everyone's needs. The place wasn't ultra clean, but was not bad at all.

Food arrives quickly. Shrimp fried rice was completely average. Fried fish wasn't as good as Top Cafe but wasn't bad either. Just not as much flavor. The tofu and vegetables were probably the best. Tofu was chewy on the outside and soft on the inside, flavored well. Vegetables were fresh and crunchy. The sauce was good.

The selling point for this restaurant seems to be the quick service and moderately low prices, which proved popular for families and shoppers who were busy on this nice day. As far as culinary excellence, you probably won't find it here. Still, solid clean restaraurant.
