I'm not too much of a bakery person but the cakes in the windows looked too good to pass up. When you walk into Palo Alto Baking Co.

I don't know if its fair to rate a bakery without trying a cake they bake, but I'll try. The place is very nice friendly, and has a wide selection of baked goodes. They even had ham/cheese baguettes on the counter, in true European fashion. Anyway, I just went for an oatmeal cookie for $1.00. It was tasty and large. Wasn't the absolutely best cookie I've had, but was passable. They got it to me quickly and for a buck, it wasn't bad. If you're looking for a nice relatively quiet place to chill after lunch, this place fits the bill.
