Peninsula Creamery goes back before my parents were born. I think this is an original location as you dont see too many buildings like this anymore. The entire ice cream shop is pretty all glass windows and on the walls are pictures of people and places that time forgot. The small selection of ice cream, the smell of grilled sandwiches in the air, and even the candy bar counter are the little things lost in today's restaurant scene. I like the atmosphere of Peninsula Creamery and would recommend a visit just on the fact it's a piece of Palo Alto history.

I went up to the counter and told the lady I was a 1st time visitor and would like a recommendation, she told me the Pepe de Pollo was a favorite among visitors. I ordered the sandwich and sat down in one of the red cushy seats. We arrived around 11:45 and just beat the lunch rush. They had all types of people walking through, normally a good sign as the food caters to all walks of life.

Within a short wait, my sandwich arrived in a white paper wrapper. For $6, it didnt look anything extraordinary but it did have globs of melting jack cheese.

Pepe de Pollo - grilled and seasoned chicken breast, red and yellow peppers, onions, dijon mustard on a french roll.

french roll - you can probably get this at the market, it was lightly toasted but tasted fresh.

chicken - cooked perfectly, very moist, mild seasonings on it, had chicken in every bite. good stuff! I never would have thought the dijon would have worked so perfectly with the chicken and cheese. I will have to steal this recipe for home. (pictures 10 and 11)

veggies - onions were carmelized, red and yellow peppers were sweet and had burnt flavor to it.

Overall, the sandwich was very good and portion size left me satisfied. I little heavy on the cheese but I gotta give them props for melting my cheese. Most restaurants get lazy and slap a unmelted slice. I would recommend trying the sandwich if you want something different than a burger. I'd rate Pepe a solid 8.

I almost left without ordering a scoop of ice cream but thought, how fair would it be to rate Peninsula Creamery without trying their ice cream? For my fellow jatbar users, I will extend my stomach and taste buds to you guys. Their ice cream selection was 8 flavors when I visited which is fine by me since they had my favorite flavor. I ordered a single Pistachio on a sugar cone.

If you look at picture #12, its a giant scoop. Look at the green globular sweet cream of heaven! And yes, there is a reason why this restaurant has Creamery in their name, it is sooooo darn smooth and creamy, it's like gelato. We have a winner!!! These guys know how to make ice cream. It's no surprise, Peninsula gets a 9 for their ice cream, 8 for the sandwich, and scoops in for an overall score of an 8.5.

Its easy to see why this place has been around so long - good food. The prices weren't the best for me, but the old-style feel and the nice selection left me a satisfied customer.

I really wanted to like this place as it sounds like a winner. Old school ice cream, plenty of sandwiches, and burgers as well. I had a little problem with the portions and the prices.

If I was to just judge on taste, I could bump up the score at least half a point. I was a little shocked after forking over $6 for a tuna sandwich, to receive a little paper wrapped white-bread sandwich with a standard amount of tuna salad and a slice of cheese. Come on! Lets either cut down the price to $4 for this sandwich or load it up some more. I finished the sandwich quickly - and while it was tasty, it left me hungry still. I think it was equal to half of a Rogers sandwich for more money!

But what was there impressed me enough that I would have rated it a 7.5. Since I was hungry still, I went for a vanilla malt. This is where it gained some points. Sure, at 4.50 it wasn't the cheapest malt, but daaamn - talk about impressive. It was one of the best malts I have had. Where Fentons goes for bulk with their ice cream, Peninsula Creamery went for quality. This was too rich to be consumed guilt-free - yet I can't complain. I paid my money and I got the goods. I would return here for ice cream/shakes/malts only. This is one of the Bay Areas best ice cream experiences. It has the old time feel as well, so I can imagine bringing my kids here on a lazy Saturday afternoon for a scoop of ice cream or a shake. And for that, Peninsula Creamery jumps up to an 8.

This is another high school destination, and I'd like to report that nothing since then has changed. It still has the same charm, appearence, ambiance, friendly wait staff, good food, and superb milkshakes.

We dropped by yesterday for a late brunch, so late that I decided to order the patty melt and a oreo shake. I'd have to caution you, this would be a weekly visit but your cardiac specialist would probably kill you themselves. The food is greasy, but oh-so-good. I was reminded of the patty melt again by the way of boscoj, and like always I forget to ask for swiss cheese. The melt comes with two slices of cheddar, butter soaked rye, chopped carmelized onions, and a perfectly cooked medium-rare patty. The fries are just a distraction, you'll probably want a fruit salad to off-set the oils. The melt was excellent, the cheese was my fault. It's better then it looks and costs about $9. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

Now I added a oreo milkshake, I don't recall one time that I've gone here and skipped the milkshake. They are about $5 a pop, so with a burger/sandwich/dish your bill is pressing $20 which does make it higher up on the scale of things but these milkshakes are not to be missed. "It tastes like ice cream!" was exclaimed at our tablet his morning and I don't think I can express is any better. They are seriously good. Creamy, wet, cold, and perfectly blended. Served in the hamilton-beech mixer cup with a water glass and tall spoon. yum.

The rest of our table ordered a meatloaf sandwich (it looked like death, but he said, and i'm sure it tasted like heaven) an omlet, a scramble and corned beef over hash which was delicious.

Overall - good service, fantastic food, no gimmicks and extra points for consistancy.

Peninsula Creamery is on the corner of Channing Ave and High St on the right hand side. There is limited street parking but the creamery is located in the less crowded neighborhood so parking should be less of a nightmare to find during lunch hours.

Peninsula Creamery no longer accepts credit cards but they do have an ATM with 1.95 surcharge in the restaurant.

I met up with a former colleague for lunch. The place had a consistent stream of people coming in but most was for take outs. We ordered two milkshakes (mint chocolate chip and Oreo) and two patty melts with Swiss cheese. We sat at a table and milkshakes were brought out to us within 5 minutes. Milkshakes were 4.50 each which consisted of a medium size cup and there were some extra within the canister, not a whole lot extra but enough to swap with my friend to sample. My mint chocolate chip was way better than the Oreo shake. Plenty of semi sweet chocolate chips with creamy mint ice cream.

Our patty melt arrived within 10 minutes. Two slices of rye bread that’s been buttered and placed on the frying pan to a golden, crispy consistency with grilled onions, nice juicy patty, and melted Swiss cheese. There’s not a whole lot of burger for $6.00. The burger was good but greasy and I could probably make something similar if I tried.

Total bill was 21.99 for two. I felt it was a bit high for the amount of food we ate. The shakes are good and I consider the shakes to be one of the better kinds I have had. The patty melt is good as well but a bit pricey for the size, it’s about the size of the tuna sandwich from above.
