Pizza Chicago was another wishlist request we were happy to try. With multiple locations in the bay area, we choose to do the Palo Alto location on El Camino Real. Easy to find and plenty of parking, Pizza Chicago specializes in deep dish gourmet pies the Air Jordon, The John Dillinger, The Untouchables, etc.

We ordered the Air Jordon Fresh Roma tomatoes, basil, and garlic. The pizza wasnt as deep as I thought it was going to be. I would say it had almost the same depth as Pizza Hut. The big difference in the crust though, was Pizza Chicage was nowhere near greasy. Probably because the crust was laced in heavy butter to give that first crust. Like the description says, A pizza so lite, it defies gravity Its true, crust was airy. I liked it a lot.

During the meal, I was kind of b*tching at the fact that there was barely any cheese on it. Well, if this pizza is catored to less fat, less calories attitude, then this pizza rocks. If I find out the Air Jordon isnt and is just lacking cheese, then we have a problem.

Overall I enjoyed Pizza Chicago and would easily make a return visit. I would like to try a meat pizza next time :) Although this pizza isnt up to par with Zacharys, it makes up with convience. For one, you dont have to worry about the 40 minute pizza wait and they have mulitple locations around the bay area.

We walked into Pizza Chicago and I found it to be a very warm and friendly interior. Looked like a comfortable place to sit for awhile while your pizza was being prepared. We were seated quickly and asked for drinks. The drinks arrived in Mason jars (nice touch) and the selection of Pizzas offered on the menu were named after famous Chicagoans. This all leads to the nice friendly fun atmosphere of the place.

The pizza arrived and it surely was deep dish. The deepness though was reflected 85% in the crust and 15% in the ingredients. Meaning, that the deep dish just meant a thicker crust. This contrasts heavily with places like Unos or Zacharys where deep dish means you're getting more of the goods. Not to mention the quality of the crust tasted very Dominos-like (or Pizza Hut?). None of the ingredients in the pizza really stood out unfortunately.

Pizza Chicago would be much more enjoyable if it had a good pizza as they got the atmosphere down pat.

I got a pizza from Pizz'a Chicago for dinner tonight- a large 'The Fridge' (basically your typical combination pizza) with roasted garlic instead of sausage. It was really good, but it almost wasn't a pizza. When I think of pizza crust, I either think of a thick crust that's doughy and chewy with a hard, tough exterior, like a rustic-style bread; or I think of a thin crust that is similar in texture to a thicker flour tortilla. Pizz'a Chicago's crust is fluffy and spongy, almost like a savory version of angel food cake. The result is something that looks like a pizza, but tastes more like a fancy focaccia. They also seem to apply the cheese lightly at Pizz'a Chicago. When I think of pizza cheese, I think of a bubbling, gooey layer of it, which this pie doesn't have. This doesn't really detract from this particular pie, but it's another thing that makes it distinctly un-pizza like.
There was plenty of topping and sauce, but the buttery flavor of the crust overshadows everything else, and I ordered my pizza with extra sauce! All this may sound very negative, but this stuff is really quite good and I would probably get it again- but it's just not quite pizza.

Prices are a little on the high side, with most of the specialty pizzas coming in at $22-23. If you can find a coupon, like I did, you can get half off a large, which definitely turns Pizz'a Chicago into a good value.

If you've got a hankering for great pizza, I probably wouldn't suggest you go to Pizz'a Chicago. However, the pizza-like thing that they make there is quite delicious.

Cheese deep dish

What did you think? It sucks if U want a real chicago deep dish. Safeway has a better deep dish chicago in their freezer section. I rate it a 2 for so-so pizza and deception; I was looking for the real thing NOT another lame pizza place.

garlic cheese bread + the sun times pizza

garlic cheese bread was a delicious heart attack waiting to happen. the sun times had sausage, pineapple, onions, basil and pesto sauce. was a pretty good balance, but could have used more of the spicy meat. would return for more.
