Thanks to Doug for suggesting Rick's Ice Cream in Palo Alto. It's been almost 2 years since we've been visited this shopping center. We had just finished a great lunch at Crossings Cafe and wanted to end the lunch on a high not.

Terry and I have some of the best luck with ordering. We arrived just in time beating out the stream of 10 people. Everyone had the same idea we had, hot day, need something cold. Rick's has a great selection of ice cream with exotic and traditional flavors.

I normally get Pistachio but saw the Saffron Pistachio and ordered a single. It's easy to differentiate this stuff and the ice cream you get at the markets. Rick's Ice Cream is super creamy and smooth, and when the heck can you get Saffron Pistachio in the market? After a couple of bites I was not enjoying the heavily induced Saffron flavor. I felt like I was eating flower ice cream. Maybe I should stick to saffron in my meals.

I didn't like the Saffron Pistachio but I have a feeling it was just not my scoop to order. I have faith Rick's Ice Cream is great as the texture and creaminess is definitely worth returning for.

RETURN VISIT for Jason! 12/28/2006 - 9 Rating: Had the industrial chocolate, wow-o-wow, much better than my previous visit, smooth as silk, sweet as hell, induced food coma afterwards. One of the finest scoops you can get in the area. Prepacked pints/quarts available for purchase.

After a small lunch at Crossings Cafe, we were looking for a bit more to fill us up. Ricks Ice Cream was just the ticket. We get over there and these is decent foot traffic into the place.

I decide to go with the two-scoop cup of Vanilla Bean and Cookies & Cream & Cookie Dough.

The Vanilla bean was the clear winner for me. It was rich and flavorful, perhaps a bit too tough with the plastic spoon, but its taste was right on.

The Cookies and Cream and Cookie Dough was a a bit much for me. I think the combination was overdone to have chocolate chip cookie dough in Cookies and Cream ice cream. I was not too fond of the cookie dough in general, so i might have enjoyed it better without it. Cookies were fresh and crunchy, not moist and bland. Ice cream was solid, not the best, but decent. I would return here to get the Vanilla and perhaps take a chance on another flavor as well.

The steady stream of customers flowing into this place definitely speaks to the popularity of it.

Our company had an open source conference and invited Ricks Ice Cream to dish out some ice cream for the attendees. Normally we get Ben and Jerrys so this is a first for us. There were 7 or 8 choices but I went with Saffron Pistachio and Vanilla Bean. While everyone else was piling on the toppings and whip cream I wanted to savor the flavors of my ice cream untouched with fillers.

Saffron Pistachio: Light subtle taste of saffron and pistachio with bits of pistachio within the ice cream. The saffron flavor definitely overpowers the taste of pistachio but the ice cream tastes light, creamy and above all fresh tasting. If you try hard enough you can taste the pistachio flavors, otherwise its just a light blend of creamy freshness.

Vanilla bean: Again, light, creamy, and fresh tasting like home made taste. You know just by the taste this is not healthy for you. The vanilla overpowered the saffron pistachio and the flavor of the beans came through. Just the right amount of sweetness without being overly done like Ben and Jerrys.

I need to make a personal visit to try out other flavors, unless they come back to our company more often.
