Its been over 2 weeks since the last time Ive had sushi. Thats 2 weeks too long in my book. I went to dinner with Brandon and Julie at Sushi Tomo in Palo Alto. Julie had been before and I remember seeing it after visiting Fuki Sushi. Im becoming more reluctant on sushi boat places these days, my last couple of visits have been subpar. I dont like the idea of eating sushi thats been sitting out on the open for over an hour. Sushi is suppose to be about the freshness of the fish. If I see them making the sushi and throwing it on the boat, its all good. Other than that, I dont want to eat it.

I didnt have quite the appetite tonight and ordered 2 items from the menu and 1 from the boat.

deep fried oysters - a bit cold but tolerable

spider roll - barely tasted any crab and was covered in a lot of rice. I dont think I would order this again

CA roll - off the sushi boat, crab was sweet, rice was bland. I wouldnt order this again

Crazy Horse roll - Tuna, Hamachi, and Salmon mixed with vegetables. Although the fish appeared to be fresh, it didnt have any flavor and tasted watery

Maybe I was in a bad mood, maybe we visited too close to closing time but none of the items I ate made me happy. There was too much rice on each roll and rice didnt have the right mix of sugar and vinegar. Fish tasted watery and could barely differentiate between the fishes? Sushi Tomo could be having an off night but if you dont want to eat sushi, they offer a large selection of japanese cuisine.

I used to live right around the corner from Sushi Tomo and was a regular at this low priced sushi restaurant. I always have a very solid dining experience here.

This time, we sat at the boats, and I had a California roll, some etomame and a Shrimp Tempura roll. All were freshly prepared and tasty. The tempura was excellent. It was very crunchy and there wasn't so much batter that the shrimp was lost. They keep the water glasses and soy sauce jars full. The servers are always very friendly.

Though this place is a little hard to find any trip to Sushi Tomo would be worth it. It may not be the absolute best sushi in the Bay Area, but it's definitely one of the better value places to visit.

Sushi Tomo is a bargain sushi joint, there's no question about it. Their competitors include Miyake and Ariyake...that's not saying much. Their rolls are stuffed with rice with very little content unless you get to know the sushi chef.

Once you get to know the sushi chef things change for the better. The rice lessens and you get more of what counts. The fish is actually pretty good quality, better then most restaurants.

My biggest gripe about this restaurant is that they're stingy with the fish. there's more stuffing then anything else. i've also had sushi with half cooked rice here...a true disappointment.

Fuki Sushi is right across the street, I'm not sure why you'd choose Sushi Tomo over Fuki unless you're on a college student's budget.

sushi on the boat

sushi has been out there on the boat for a while. The rice is hard and dry. Not a pleasant experience.

Salmon Teriyaki

Went there for lunch on a Thursday. Not crowded, yet I waited 30 minutes for our basic bento box! Then when I only gave $1 as a tip because of the slow service, the waiter CHASED me out the door and yelled at me for not giving a bigger tip!
