I was chatting with Terry's wife and she called me a bad Catholic. I completely forgot I wasn't suppose to eat meat today. Seeing I had dinner to still do, I'd go try out Al's Fish n Chips. I called another friend and confirmed the restaurant was legit. I heard the fish tacos were super good.

Al's Fish n Chips isnt something you wont find easily. It's not readily accessible from the 280 or 101 and will have to do about 10 minutes from either freeway. Don't let the drive scare you as it's entirely worth it. I arrived around 6PM and there were quite a number of people waiting for their orders. Foot traffic was constant as it appears to be a favorite in the neighborhood. The menu suggests Mexican influences like fish tacos, carne asade, Ceviche but also a variety of seafood entres to choose from. I went with the 2 piece fish and chips and a peach Snapple.

I sat at the counter facing the wall while reading a real estate magazine. How depressing is it to see a $700,000 3 bedroom 1 bath condo? I can buy a lot of fish and chips for that money. Anyways, this is sure taking a long time to get my food. I was able to browse through the magazine, local paper, and drink 1/3 of my snapple.

Food was served after a 15 minute wait. The pictures don't do justice to size of the fish. It's larger than it looks and it's thick slabs too. (pictures 5 and 6) The 2 piece fish and fries rings in at $5.95. The fish was bright white and had no slime. Batter was fairly light and had a beer/pepper seasoning to it. It was crunchy on 1 side but the side it was laying on was soggy. Maybe they need to set it out and drain? I would estimate it was 95% fish and 5% batter and its a tad below excellent...its that frickin good.

With fish and chips, I classify them into different types; japanese tempura, english dark and light brown, generic breading, and southern corn meal. Al's Fish and Chips lands on an english dark brown. I detect some beer flavoring and batter was completely cooked and thank gawd no raw batter in sight.

Ventilation is normally a problem with fish and chips restaurants but it's not a problem with Als Fish n Chips, you won't be smelling like a deep fryer. The employees are friendly and decorations suggests Alfonso might be from Cuba? I have to come back for the fish tacos but it's going to take a lot of will power to pass up the delicious fish and chips.

Some of the best I've ever had. The shrimp and fish pieces were large. Good amount of chips

Fish taco plate for $9.95

The fish taco plate comes with black beans and white rice. Tacos are super tasty with battered cod? Black beans were too salty, too many bay leaves. Tortillas look homemade but it's the secret sauce that seals the deal. One of the best fish tacos.
