I was informed by a jatbar user that La Azteca in Redwood City served a mean carnitas. Seeing that Im usually up for a carnitas challenge, I made the 15 minute drive from my house to give it a shot. Im not even sure how someone would spot this place from the road, its kinda off the beaten path, just look for the yellow and green building. Im sure this place is a favorite among locals.

The restaurant is attached to the market and has plenty of seats for indoor and outdoor dining. I arrived during the late afternoon on a Sunday and there were a number of people enjoying their beloved tortilla torpedos. The menu can be a scarey site as it has tons of items to choose from. I walked along the steel trays and spotted the carnitas. I ordered a regular carnitas with guacamole, can of coke, and some chips.

tortilla - not the pancake looking style but more of the white streamed stuff. Very moist, good stuff

beans - refried I think, my brain doesnt register what I was eating at the time, I was just blown away on how big the burrito was. No complaints for the beans, I liked it.

rice - a bit on the watery side but I dont know if thats because of the beans. Im also confused if the rice was salty or the pork? Either way, they put way too much rice in here.

salsa - homemade and great stuff. I can see why they sell this stuff by the weight. Has some heat and good mix of flavor

carnitas - although it looks like the carnitas was cooked hours ago, it was still quite good. Wasnt too heavy on the oil but it didnt have the carnitas crunch that I love. La Azteca doesnt skimp out on the meat as there was plenty of meat to go with every bite.

I do have 2 complaints about La Azteca. First one, I know the meat has been sitting in the tray for a couple of hours, can you at least heat it up before serving it? I like my meat served hot. My final complaint is a big one for me. Seeing that we review A LOT of places for the common folk, jatbar always looks for the good tasting meals at the right price. So what is up with $1.50 for a can of coke??? Not the bottle, cuz Im willing to pay $2+ for the imported stuff but come on, can of coke shouldnt cost more than $1. We all know and understand restaurants need to markup their beverages to lower the costs of their food, but $1.50 for a can of soda is robbery to me.

Other than those complaints, La Azteca serves a really good carnitas burrito. I need a rematch just so I can try it during a lunch rush when its prepared piping hot. Im quite positive the score would go up a notch or two. The burrito portions are monsters and I think they are easily over 1lb maybe hitting the 2lb range. Its a meal that will send you to sleep back at work. I like La Azteca and will make a mental note of its location whenever Im in the Redwood City area. With so many choices on the menu, you should be able to accommodate the pickiest of eaters. Dont forget to try the chips and salsa!
